As it is show season my horse is wearing his lycra body after his bath. He is so frightened when I remove it. Especially the long piece under his belly. He shakes so much and tries to get away. Any ideas how I can get him used to it or what else could I fasten it with. He does not mind wearing it and it does a fab job. My horse before wore it too and never minded the noise so wondered if its worth persevering.

He will get used to it!

I would buy a length of velcro from a habdashery shop, so as not to wear out/damage your nice lycra hoodie.... and then undo it, so it makes the velcro noise.

Start off far away, and then as the horse tolerates it, get closer. Let him sniff it and show him it being undone... then give him a treat instantly, as soon as the noise starts.... obviously you will need a helper when you are undoing it out of reach. Then he will associate the noise with something lovely!

'Pas de Velcro'!!!

Put radio on, horse wearing whatever you can best hold him with (bridle/headcollar) and lunge rope (wear hat and gloves as rope burn likely!) and stand out in field where he's not going to slip over....and then just stand there and open and close velcro to the beat of the music!

Ignore horses' scaredy cat antics, (as long as you can hold onto him), let him leap about on the end of the rope, and keep opening and closing it until he stops reacting. And then stop, approach, give him a pat...and continue process.

Eventually he should stop reacting, and then the he gets lots of praise and not much velcro ripping.

Have done this with all my youngsters - and escpecially with a friends grown up pony who she put brushing boots on for the first time in his life and then he wouldn't let her take them off for over a week as he was terrified of the velcro noise - it is pretty loud!!

Our pointer the paranoid one, used to have issues with static from rugs, and velcro noises, it never got better with him, so we just used alternative materials in the end as it made him completely nuts....he was however pure TB......!!
