Is anyone using tri-tec 14 successfully to repell crab flies? I guess I'm speaking to anyone out there in the New Forest mainly.
Thanks.

I would be interested in your replies. I have far more experience of crabs that I would ever wish for.:rolleyes:

The product contains these. Cypermethrin, Pyrethrins, Piperonyl Butoxide, Technical and Butoxypolypropylene Glycol and appears to be a US product.

These have got worse for us year on year over the past 25 years. Two of us riding the horse (ie me and the crab fly) doesn't always work too well :D One of us has to part company with the horse and it isn't usually the crab fly.

I think it did work for us to some effect, I felt better using it (or deosect) at least - we were actually just over the wilts border but did sometimes have an issue with them.

The beauty of a forest bred NF is that they get used to them from birth. To be honest, I gave up trying to find anything as the little buggers are not easy to shift. Deosect seems to be one of the most effective. Some horses do react badly and we can always spot an 'outsider' in the show ring at NF show. They are vile things and I struggle to dispose of them as they have to go crunch. Sadly some ponies/horses really do get upset and have to move out of the area.

I find this Biteback product quite effective.

if I'm at home ie I've brought one home with us then I let them have a swim. It avoids the "crunching" it also avoids the possibility if you have them cupped in your hand trying to get ready for the "crunch" you have less chance of losing them.

Thanks. We're considering moving to the NF but I have a sensitive TB.

Ugh, they sound awful 😖

Oh blimey. I'm worried mine will be that one.
mine is like that except he charges off at a gallop around the yard.Just throws himself around. Really isn't safe. He is also yellow with a lot of black markings which doesn't help.
The longest it took to get the damned thing off him was 6 hours. Tried everything, standing next to another horse to try and get it to change horses, totally soggy bath, endless trying to catch it. In the end there was no choice but to get between his hind legs and pray.
I try and keep them rugged from early on in the spring to try and avoid them in the fields. Rugs covering as much of the horse as possible. Ride on fly rugs, masks when out riding.

I was looking forward to the summer until you mentioned crabs :D

Tritec 14 is simply brilliant. We don't have crab flies so I can't say but it honestly deters everything and protects my oh-so-tasty mare who used to be unridable because of the flies. It lasts ages once it's built up in their coat too, my other horses get sprayed every few days.

Asorbine ultra black is a similar product, not quite as effective but half the price.

That's great to hear thanks 😊

well that should be exciting :D:D

if it is likely to bother your horse and you don't have to move to the NF have you thought of taking the horse there for a few days holiday. I'm sure someone will tell you where to go for maximum benefit.
It is very much dependent on the horse. It really does make riding difficult if you have a very reactive horse.

That's a really good idea thank you 😊

I've used TriTec as a decent repellent to deer keds, deosect can work too.
Am not in the NF but we do have regular issues locally with deer keds, ticks and occasionally Lymes, so try to keep on top of things.
Thanks. If we end up there, I have to hope it works. It's expensive though, does tri-tec last a few days once applied?

This is a good idea, we went for an escourted ride about 5 years ago, the guy told us to book in May as we should avoid the crab flies, but they were early that year...Can totally recommend escourted rides. Crab flies are definitely expanding their area, I'm a good way from the NF, and we've had them here for the last few summers. Biteback is good !
