Bit of background - 8 months ago, we bought a shetland and his companion from a local girl. I believed the owner, when she said that neither had any history of laminitis, but when they arrived it was pretty obvious that the shetland was a bit pottery. The girl who owned them told me that they lived out 24/7 and she just popped up once a day to fill their water up - so she probably wouldn't have noticed if either were laminitic. Anyway, I had my vet and farrier check them over and both vet and farrier thought that the shetland was a chronic laminitic

. In the meantime, the owner occasionally texts me to see if ponies are ok and as I don't want to worry her, I say yes. We treat the shetland for laminitis and inspite of everything my vet, farrier and I do he gets progressively worse and 2 months ago, we make the awful decision to have him PTS. Today, previous owner gets in touch and wants to see ponies - how on earth do I tell her what has happened?

Be truthful! Whatever she says she can't change what's happened and TBH, they're nothing to do with her now, she sold them to you and by not being quite honest with you too. It's regrettable but it's happened, she deserves the truth I feel especially if you think she still tries to have a 'hold' on them when they're no longer hers.

Tell her the truth as gently as you can -she may be upset but will understand that you have tried your best and have acted on advice of your vet .

Thanks for all your replies. I know you are all right and I should tell her what has happened. He was such a lovely little pony and so brave and I know we did everything we could - my vet was absolutely marvellous and came out even when she wasn't on call. However, I had a feeling she will blame me for what has happened as she still seems to think that the ponies are hers. I really am being pathetic as I am old enough to be her mothers older sister.

Doesnt it annoy you when people do that

The thing is she had the cheek to say to me when i bought him "oh becareful he doesnt get laminitis, we keep him off the grass to keep his weight down" LOL!! he was obese!!!

I just managed to keep his weight down and thankfully he hasnt had another attack. I feel for you because you seem to have doen everything you can for the little mite

I would just be honest and tell her everything. i would tell her he had obviously had it when you got him and that you didnt tell her for fear of upsetting her. Why should you take the blame???

other then that tell her you sold him!

p.s. sorry you had to have him PTS

Well you have nothing to berate yourself for if anything she's partly to blame for not treating the condition in the first place. They are both your ponies so she has nothing to say about it at all. You did everything you could for him and I'm sure were very upset when he was PTS. Tell her the truth, if she gets funny then refer her to the vet, if you think the vet will speak to her. I reckon she would get the truth then!

Be blunt but kind at the same time (if you get me). Above all be honest, you took them on with lammi and did all you could.
