Tricky situation - Suspensory Ligament/Treatment/Insurance

My TB was diagnosed with an acute injury to his hind suspensory ligament last December.

He had shockwave therapy and injections directly into his ligament. After 6 weeks box rest he had a second scan which showed no signs of improvement. He has another scan at the end of Feb.

So, if the next scan again shows no improvement, what will happen? I am presuming the vet will recommend an operation but my vets bills are already over £3k so the insurance would not cover it and there is no way I can afford to pay for it.

Am I right in thinking that he may have to be PTS because I can't afford the op and, that in that situation, my insurance won't pay out?

Has anyone else been in this situation?

You normally have cover for loss of use give the company a ring and explain how worried you are.If you have loss of use then they will freemark him and give you the cover you insured him for.
I found that my horses ligament need at least 10 weeks to show a improvement with the scan .His was a different area the curb .Have a chat with your vet he might be able to work out how to keep the costs down.They dont worry about costs if its ins. job but are normally helpful if you exlain your concerns about excess.I know its a worry my fees are at £3000 for a operation .Good luck with your horse .

Where do you live? The price of the operation varies greatly Willesley charge £1,500 for it whereas others charge £3,000. If it comes to having the op I would shop around for prices before making any decisions.

how sound is he now? sometimes they're left with changes on ultrasound, but come sound with treatment. if you do need surgery and you dont have LOU, then you'll either have to pay yourself, retire him or PTS and no, you wouldn't get the money from the insurance company for having him PTS by choice. i paid for my horse's surgery on a credit card - there's no way i was having him PTS just coz i couldn't afford it.
