Please can someone give me some suggestions on the best way to trim horses heals. Mine are quite this and i just seem to get looking a bit hacked off when I try. I use a comb and scissors but they still don't look right. Any suggestions?

oh dear I read the whole post as trimming the heels as in the hoof.. which i was a bit worried about.. As for trimming the feathers, i cant really explain, it needs to be shown and we all cut BIG steps at some point lol

I didn't expain very well I meant that he has a small amount of feather but he is a non-native coloured and I need to trim the feathers

Use a medium or fine tail rake first, then finish off using the comb.

Always comb and then cut above the comb with the scissors, if you do this you won't get the chopped look!

I think there is a good video on trimming heels on horse hero.com

I use clippers but looks a bit bald for a few days, looks fine after about 5 days!

I'm too impatient to use comb and scissors, depends how hairy they are i suppose though, my mares can just be chopped off in one and doesn't look daft but gelding too hairy for that!

Ditto tazanotabza, use a comb & scissors as they do in the hair dressers & take your time. If you rush you'll have big steps in it & it'll look horrible. If it's a few weeks till a show then you could use clippers & then the baldness will grow back in but I prefer the scissors & comb for a pro finish.
