Sorry if spelling is wrong, can't be bothered to go and look at the packet!

Old lurcher is on this and the vet has suggested giving her a break for a month. I'm not sure if that is for her long term health (not really an issue at her age) or so it works better when reintroduced. I should have asked but stupidly took two dogs to the vets, forgetting how hysterical young lab goes in the surgery.

I can ring tomorrow and find out, tbh I don't think not having it is an option, but in the meantime does anyone know?

IIRC it's something to do with elimination of the drug in the system - it's a very long-acting drug, 1-2 months per dose, and has long term implications for renal and hepatic function if allowed to build up to excessive levels. Do speak to your vet to get a proper explanation. :p

I don't think you can use other NSAIDs in the interim unfortunately.

Yes, it's normal to have a break from it, it should be 2 doses a fortnight apart then 5 doses a month apart then skip a dose and start again. A treatment cycle is 6.5 months, 7 doses.

The loading doses bring it up to a therapeutic level, then each monthly dose keeps it within the therapeutic level but more than 6 consecutive monthly doses will take it over the maximum so you skip a dose to allow it to drop and then start again. Think of a slightly uphill wave diagram!

Sometimes the month off can mean they get an increase in pain in which case you are usually offered some interim meds like metacam or similar to tide you over, so don't think if she is struggling in the month off that you need to just grin and bear it - ask what they can do.

Thank you both. I will give them a ring today. She is at least 15 so I am not really worried about her kidneys and so on, I think I would rather she just had it. Will phone up and see. She widdles in the house if her hips hurt, as she won't squat if she can avoid it.
