As title...my brand spanking new horse was being shod on Thursday & was a bit unsure about being hot shod...and managed to tread on a toe clip which went into his foot. Didn't see it for myself as o/h was in attendance. Apparently it bled a reasonable amount.

We have been poulticing with animalintex since, changing daily. The horse is very lame, but the wound is barely visible & looks clean. No heat really, leg not hot or swollen, horse happy in himself, eating, drinking etc. But he really is quite sore.

However, he's full TB & now has no shoes on at all as the farrier abandoned the exercise & is coming back on Thurs. So he might be sore just cos he has no shoes on...

How likely is it that the toe clip went far enough into his foot to damage a bone? When should I be getting worried? I haven't been yet cos the farrier was v matter of fact & didn't seem alarmed. Horse is up to date with tetanus.

My tb stood on 4 inch nail out hacking like yours is a full tb.After two weeks and vet digging big hole in his hoof wall he was absolutely fine.He had course of anti biotics to prevent infection. The puncture was at the side of his frog midway.
This last fortnight my mare has been of work with bruise in her frog it took about 2 to 3 weeks before she was comfortable.Think she stood on flint out hacking from looks of bruise.
Arnica tablets are good for bringing bruise out if you have any.
