Hi

I am looking for tips on how to teach a yearling to trot in hand. How do you get them to understand what you are asking them to do? Walking is no problem but how do you make that step up?

Thank-you in advance for any help

just make him walk faster and faster til he breaks into trot! will get quicker with each transistion, use your voice trot and clicking, you might also find a long schooling whip helpful to encourage him forward at first! be consistant with commands and keep each session shhort and sweet! practise when going to field and when coming back in! Shouldnt take long!

When I taught T, I got my friend to help with a schooling whip, I gave him the voice command and she backed it up with the whip, just waved it to encourage him. He soon got the idea of what a click or trot on means! I too, did the practicing when coming in or out from the field, we did it everywhere so he knows the cues.

Do some ground work with a pressure halter so that they learn to stay by your side whatever pace you go at. That way it will just be a natural reaction for them to trot when you run
