Trotting on roads

I do but try to stick to up hills, I will trot on the flat but as others have said I don't like them to fly along, I stopped hacking out with a friend who encouraged her horse to go as fast as possible in trot everywhere we went.

We regularly trot and canter our (barefoot) ponies on the road. Most are also driven, and when in harness will leave the yard in trot, and continue for 10-15 miles, slowing only for junctions.
They're all sound, and their feet trim themselves.

it depends what you want to do with your horse.
If you ever want to work it on hard ground then you should IMO strengthen its legs which can include trotting on the roads.

I always had the intention of hunting my horse and regularly go out for fittening 'trotting' where I rarely break back to walk on the roads for 30 mins +

I think preparation is key for whatever you want to do and for me trotting on roads - including some gentle downhill - works for my horse as he is now well balanced and ready for the work he needs to do. When out hunting he can't keep up with the bigger horses so he canters steadily on the roads [to many gasps from some readers I'm sure] but touch wood he's always sound as a pound, and I rarely boot him up either. Did the same with my pony who cantered the roads so she didn't have to flat out trot when hunting, rarely booted and never a day lame.
