Trotting poles for building up back end

Frankie's currently just doing non ridden work while we hopefully build up his fitness and muscle tone in his back end following time off with a bad back.

At the moment he is just being lunged over poles that are scattered about the school (in walk mostly and building up trot). I'd like to build up to working him over a sequence of poles (I think only 3 to begin with) however have no idea how far apart they should be? He is a 14hh cob.

Also, it it best to do this in walk and trot or trot only? Any other exercises we can try gratefully received :)
