how far apart should trotting poles be so that the horse puts in one step in between each pole ( not very well explained but i hope you get the gist!)
i dont know if it matters but its for a hoprse about 16hh.

I'm also interested in this - I was told to do 4 - 41/2 steps but my 15h cob always clips them so not sure if they need to be closer or further apart!

when I do trotting poles for George (16.3) I just do one of my own big strides (probably about a 1M) between pole, for canter poles I do 9 pixie steps (you know 1 foot directly in front of the other) - hope this helps / makes sense!

I do 4 1/2 pixie steps (you know 1 foot directly in front of the other) for normal trot poles. I will open then to 5-6 to make her stretch (once warmed up).

thanks everyone
