My horse has had a front shoe removed due to a suspected abcess, have been poulticing for 7 days now (on vets advice) and nothings come out. The vet asked me to let him know how she was moving - she is wearing a boot (like for barefoot horses) over her poultice, she was walking well with the boot on but I was told (not by the vet) I needed to take the boot off to get a true indication, I did this and she didn't look quite as sound in walk and really quite lame in trot. Surely a horse that has worn shoes all her life and was being trotted up with only three shoes and has also had her sole thinned by the vet would look lame anyway so how can this be a true indication?! Would it be better to trot her up with boot on?

Not sure but they could be looking to see that she is evenly sore as in lost shoe sore as against weighting one part of her hoof more than the rest to avoid the abscess.

True indication would be without the boot, should be 1/10 lame with no shoe on anymore then abscess still there, but foot will become soft after 7 days poulticing so will be lame from that aswell, check for pulse and pain on palpation of sole or around abscess area if non get the shoes back on if she wears shoes, you will need to start hardening up the sole so put iodine in abscess hole and hydrogen peroxide on sole for a few days.
