Troy has a swollen willy

Just brought Troy and Hannah in from the field and there were loads of midges around. Troy was going mad kicking at his belly (this is the first time he has met flies) and Hannah has all bites on her.

However, could flies cause his little willy (although it is quite big for such a young man

) to swell up? He is not having any problems weeing (has done two since coming in to his stable) but does not like it being touched (although this is the first time I have tried

) But when I did manage to touch it, there did not feel to be any heat.

Any suggestions? Poor little man

It could just be the flies. However maybe if it is still swollen tomorrow or looks worse then maybe get the vet out to check it?

I'm sure its just flies but I am paranoid about these things atm.
 
I would keep an eye on him and see how he is tomorrow. But I would suggest it is the flies as I noticed some buzzing around Mcfly's willy tonight when I brought them in.
You could always put some fly repellant on his belly around his willy which may help repel them a little. I would be careful how close you go to his willy though as I am not sure about some of the ingredients and the sensitive skin he would have on his willy. Perhaps someone who has used it around their horses private parts might know more?

The vet is coming to someone else's horse tomorrow morning I think anyway, so if it is still swollen, I will get the vet to have a look. But he did not seen to be bothered by it at all, and he was not in any discomfort because he was his usual bouncy self, trying to mount me whenever I kneeled down to pick up some poo or pick out Hannah's feet

It probably the flies, BUT he might have injured it kicking his belly at the flies, if it hasn't gone down in the morning, call the vet immediately! Now everyone is shouting DRAMA QUEEN but I have just had to have my stallion pts because he injured his willy in a similar circumstances. Its important that treatment is started asap in the case of willy injuries. I posted about this awhile back, because my stallions got worse and I needed to fashion a device to hold it up and a few people made jokes about using gaffa tape, made snides comments about him being a stallion and asked for pictures just so they could see it (I didn't post any) but this is a serious problem if a stallion or gelding traumatises their willy and should be dealt with as such!
Good Luck hopefully its nothing to worry about but foalies do tend to hang their willies out alot and its very possible he has caused some injury kicking at his belly because of flies, if it is still swollen in the morning your best bet is to be on the safe side and get the vet to check it.

Because he is so young get it checked out by your vet. Any infection could prove fatel, especially if its the navel cord.. Better safe than sorry. My foal last year had a navel infection through flies (vet said) and had to have antibiotics. Luckily I caught it early. Some people I know were not so lucky.
 
Thanks - I decied not to post about it after the first one, it really annoyed me that people were taking the mick out of him and his situation, but I will share my experience if it could save someone elses horse!
 
Thanks... I will check it in the morning, and then decide what to do. If the swelling has gone down, then I will see how it is tomorrow night (after he has been out again) to see whether it is flies. If it is still up in the morning I will get the vets out... just in case.

He does not seem to have any pain with it... and like I said, he weed twice while I was there and did not look as though that hurt at all. God, all this looking at willies is making me giggle

I'm sure it is just the flies too but I second what horsegroupie says and if it is still swollen today then get the vet to have a look. I have known of a couple of nasty incidents involving swollen willies - best to get it checked out sooner rather than later. Hope he's ok.
 
When I got the vet out to my foal as he had a small infection on his navel (working its way up), he was alert and weeing ok. don't wait till he is poorly as it will be too late then (posion in the blood stream) Foals are so vunerable... and special...
