Hi Guys,

Are we all feeling festive & generous? Hope so because I need a favour!

I've finally decided its time to pull out all the stops to generate some quick cash & have found the dream truck, not too far away either which is a bonus. The cash I'm still working on but anyway...

I need to ask those who have done it before (I'm a truck virgin...had the licence for years but never owned one!!) some questions:-

* Insurance - What as, Horsebox, or normal rigid box truck (if no option for horsebox). Do they care?
* Who is best / most competitive to insure with?
* Any decent comparison sites (I cant find any!)
* Any tips / advice on insuring
* Tax - am I right in thinking for a 2 axle with old suspension the worst case for a 14 tonner is £238?

Also...your thoughts on what you would pay for a 1994 ish truck, in pretty good shape, with living & room for 4. Just curious as to peoples thoughts on such matters in the wider world :)

Thanks you bunch...& Cheery Mistmas (I've been on the gin already, hic!) X

I'm just on my second lorry now,

Insured with Anthony D Evans, any driver over 25 is about £200 for a 7.5 tonne wagon. Several horse insurance companies do lorry insurance. NFU, SEIB ETC. Never seen any comparison sites for trucks, just did individual quotes after googling.
Breakdown with Equine Rescue Services, or the other one I would is the Association/Organisation of Horsebox Owners. Take care a breakdown company will travel the horses separately and not on your wagon, on a low loader:(.
My 7.5 tonne is £165 a year to insure, same as the 6.5 tonne, if your talking an HGV over 7.5 tonnes I couldn't tell you.

There are quite a lot of bargains out there at the mo, I just picked up a project lorry 1999 Iveco for £5000, and have spent a couple of thousand getting bits done, including the ramp as it couldn't be lifted. The basic lorry, and length was good for me, only 20ft long. Cost me £120 to fix with new springs. The lorry would now sell for at least £12k on a good day. If your willing to look past a few modifications you can also pick up a bargain, as I have. Mine turned out to have brand new electricals and appliances inside the living, worth £2k, never used. The living was just extremely dated, and needed tarting up but its nearly all done now :D.

@Coop - Thanks - Anthony D Evans do look very competitive - I'll be calling them tomorrow - hope they work Xmas eve!

@ROG - Unfortunately yes, I am - grew up around trucks just have never owned one before, but my head is fully around the (pain in the bum) hours laws.

Anybody have any thoughts on parking - no room on the yard I'm at apaprently :(

You could ask a local farmer for parking if its a private HGV for your personal use if its a work vehicle a local haulage company with a yard, tax is £165 for private hgv insurance if its a horse box most of the equestian insures will quote, otherwise its the normal HGV insurance people you need.. and yes as ROG said over 7.5ton needs tacho and drivers hours even for private use... Value is realy down to the body if its a nice thing with tilt cab and upto date living and in good nick £10 k upwards rough tatty with some test but useable £5k at a guess...
