Oliver is perfectly well behaved at home but has a tendency to get all over excited at PC rallies. He doesn't do anything overly naughty, just canters on the spot, or canters when everyone else is trotting, the odd wahey buck and curls himself up like a coil, bringing head in.

Have been to the saddlery this morning and they suggested trying him with a calmer and sold me NAF Magic syringes.

Soo, the question is (aside from do they even work) is how much should I give a 13.1hh pony? The syringe says "1 syringe 1 - 1 1/2 hours before competition".

Is that a whole syringe regardless of whether you have an 11hh or a 16hh equine?

Thanks Victoria.

I did just give him half a syringe, so hopefully that'll be ok. I don't want him to fall asleep in the trailer on the way to the rally.

I use a whole syringe of instant magic to a 750 kg ned......17.2hh so I reckon about 1/2- 2/3 for yours?

Works a treat!

It did bugger all!

He'd been ridden hard before we went, given half a tube of this and was STILL cantering around when he should be trotting.

Hilarious. Back to the drawing board

I have tried Naff Instant Magic three times on my stressy traveller mare (the whole syringe for a 16hh hunter type) but it had absolutely no effect.

The only thing that works for her is sedalin - but I guess thats a bit overkill for doing a pony club rally (and probably a big No No) !!!

There was a pony there today who I swear was doped. It had it's head strung out, couldn't even manage a jumping effort and every time it went down the grid it coughed at the end as if to say.....too tired!

I just don't know what to do with him. He gets himself more and more wound up because he finds the company of strange ponies far too exciting and wants to show off. Hannah isn't overly bothered by it, but the more he coils his head up, the stronger he gets and the more she appears to "hold" on to the front end....adding to the problem I suspect.

He looks very "wow" when he does it...."look at me....aren't I handsome" sort of antics.

Funny really, I was talking to one of the parents who said they gave a third of a tube to their pony and it almost fell over!

I think perhaps the adrenaline overrides the effect of an instant calmer if the pony/horse is that way inclined.

Do you think he will settle the more often you go or does he get worse each time?

Has anyone taken him hunting? Maybe a season's hunting might get him used to strange company or if all else fails perhaps you could try the bit pictured in a post below!!

Realistically though - if she is still happy with him - it will make her a super rider! There is nothing to be gained from a push button pony.
