I have always preferred and opted to go for geldings as a pose to mares for some reason, and it has only been the past few weeks that I have really started to questions WHY?

Every mare I have ever owned has been fab, and I really can't think of a reason to rule them out. Including a Chesnut ex-racer! :p

So in my search for a new TB I am tomorrow going to look at a mare who is 3 and a Gelding who is 5 and see which steals my heart more (if either).

Why do mares get such a bad rep???

Generally I am a gelding girl! I've never physically owned a mare myself but the majority in our yard at the moment are mares! My sister is the opposite, always owned mares and has only just got her 1st gelding. I think if you get them on side, they'll give you their heart if they could. I like my geldings because I'm a bossy cow ;)

Like i said, i've never had a problem with the mares I have owned/ridden, but some how always ended up looking at/buying geldings.

The mare I am looking at tomorrow has the sweetest face, so I am hoping she is as lovely as she looks... But then the Gelding also looks lovely....

i had one mare on loan, she was a total cow, had geldings ever since !swore i would never own another mare, until today, when my new chesnut mare arrived ! she seems very sweet though, so far ! :D

As said above, I think once you've won a mare over they really would 'give you their heart' if they could. I just love mares, apart from when we're all hormonal :o

I wouldn't rule geldings out at all but it just happens that I've never loaned or owned one :p

I have no idea.

I have never owned a 'bad' mare, or a bad' gelding for that matter.

I presume it is just a matter of personal opinion, eg: I wouldn't ever consider even looking at a Hafflinger because the ones I have known have been total swines, bolshy, pig headed, stubborn, dominant...realistically I know that I have probably just met a few awkward ones and from what I hear they really aren't that bad afterall. So, if anyone asked me what I thought of Haffies they wouldn't get an encouraging opinion from me.

Currently, I won't even consider anything but a mare, and that has to be of a certain breed, bloodline, and, to be even more awkward, I have colour criteria as well :)

My mares are exacting revenge on my sexism by having produced only colts for the last 4 years! :D

I had a gelding before and nw have a mare that I love - I just wish she wouldn't pee everywhere and torment the poor yard stallion when she's in season.

I love my mares more than geldings tbh :D
think its because i love a challenge!

Although i do love my current orange boy, as hes a bit of a nut case and is the moodiest gelding iv ever known... hehe

I prefer mares. I think the reason they get a bad rep is because some people forget you ask a mare, not tell. If you start with the attitude that you'll tell them what to do, then you will only ever meet stroppy cow bags. Ask however & they'll go the extra mile.

I have one of each at the moment and love both of them the same, I think they have different qualities but equally good. My mare is very sweet and gentle and my gelding is fun and cheeky.

I've had a few mares and less geldings and have to say, I much prefer mares but perhaps i've been lucky and just had good ones! I adore my mare, most of the time she's seen a jump, read the question and jumped it way before me! But occasionally, I could gladly leave her tied up on side of the duel carriageway!! Sometimes, they can be too smart!;)

Dunno, I love my mare, she's fab. Can't imagine why anyone wouldn't want one, they are so intelligent. You just have to make sure you get their mind onside!

I wonder if our preference for mares or geldings reflects the friendships/relationships we have with people? I've got a few close women friends but I've always got on with men better than women as they are much more straightforward, no hidden agendas and more trustworthy (well, most of the time!). I own 2 geldings and 2 mares, and likewise I find the geldings easier to get along with, as long they've got food, company and aren't asked to do anything too much out of their comfort zone they are perfectly happy chaps.

The mares on the other hand are prone to mood swings, aloofness and strong opinions. They make up for this by being sharply intelligent..scarily so sometimes. As Kat says, fine as long as they are on your side! I tend to treat them with a lot more respect as they can be rather unforgiving.

Also something I found myself doing, don't know if anyone else is the same, but I talk to the geldings in a completely different voice than the one I use for the mares. For the geldings it's a sort of gruffer matey tone, for the mares it's much more soothing.

I definitely prefer mares. I have always had a better bond with mates than geldings. There just seems to be something special with 'girls together' that creates a very special relationship.

My last mare was a complete crazy moose to ride but on the ground she would have followed me anywhere if I told her it was safe to do so.

My current gelding on the other hand I cannot bond with what so ever. He is so frustratingly dim and i dont really trust him. I am seriously contemplating swapping him for a mare.

Do you have any pics of the horses your going to view. I love horse shopping!

Oh I love my geldings, but tbh don't get on with many woman very well :P
I had a lovely pony mare, she never came into season, so never had mood swings and was really like a gelding in nature. Turns out she has benine (sp?) cysts in her ovaries so doesn't cycle! Harmless and we didn't want to breed from her so win win!

I would never rule out a horse for any reason, but am naturally a gelding person (they are on occasion forced to endure the pink accessories I am otherwise denied though ;))
