Hi all,

How do you buy second hand saddles on line with confidence?

I already have a beautiful, M to M Barnsby dressage and as we're doing a bit of jumping I need a jump saddle. We only jump once a week, but although we're only doing 90cm jumps my horse does have a huge jump and I just don't feel that my dressage saddle is appropriate.

I've had a serious look at all the usual online resources and it seems that they are all D - D 9 inch or less. My dressage is a 10 D -D. Do jump saddles normally come up narrower if they're cut back at the pommel more??

I know each make will be slightly different too, so perhaps some of these 9's may well be ok.

Any advice/tips would be appreciated. Thanks!

Personally, I held out for my dream saddle, a bates elavation saddle...

Well over a grand new, but I got mine off ebay, for less than £500, its fully adjustable, I have had it in a med-wide, wide, and extra wide gullet, it also comes with cair, which I like to use... no pratting around with flocking, and its a lovely leather, and very comfy. I used to use it all the time on my mare, and now its my saddle for my youngster, giving me a nice secure seat should he play up. I wouldn't be without mine and can see it coming in very handy when we begin competing. Ofcourse, even things like adjustable saddles don't fit all types, but I generally find them fairly versatile for the type of horse that I ride

My saddler said the other day that the D to D measurement is only a VERY ROUGH guideline as it all depends where the D's are placed! Case in point, there is an extra extra wide saddle in the yard's tack room that measures the same from D to D (think it's 8") as the medium saddle I have for my TB!

Oh crikey! Mmm, that's what I was thinking with regard to the D's as there seems to be such a wide discrepancy in the measurements with the ones I've viewed online. I've seen saddles marked up as medium varying from 7" to 9"! Been thinking about the interchangeable gullet system but just concerned as I was told the gullets have kink at the top which doesn't suit a lot of horses, be just my luck for MY horse to be the one it doesn't fit. Minefield!!

I ended up buying a bates online for less than half the 'new price'.

What we did (was a bit naughty) was to get a saddler out, try various saddles until we had 'the one' that fitted both of us. I then said to the saddle fitter I would think about it and then searched online for the same saddle knowing it fitted. It cost us the price of a saddle fitting but was worth it for the saving on the price of the saddle and knowing the one we were getting was right.
