My girls favourite shetland is being retired at 20 years old. They are selling him for 150 euros, but him they can't find him a new home he will be PTS or worse case scenario sold for meat. I am desperately trying to talk my OH into letting us take him on. He will be great for the girls who are learning to ride, they hardly cost anything to keep as he is very rustic, we have a field. He is not very horsey or into animals and we already have 1 dog, purchasing a puppy, guinea pigs and one horse. Am I pushing it? What good points can I throw at him to make him see a shetland would be great!!

Good value for money, good entertainment, can help your girls learn basic horsecare on one their own size.

I have a shetty (from a lovely HHOer) and he is great fun, nice natured and everyone loves him. He's good company for the others and pretty much takes care of himself (except for plenty of treats and cuddles, hehe). He did have feeds during the summer as he was on very restricted grazing during the summer, so that is something to keep in mind. The farrier came today and the little chap didn't even need his hooves trimming. :)
