Hello

I have a little dog just over a year old (french bulldog x pug supposedly). Looking at his breeding you would expect him to be a chunky little thing, he is definitely not so guessing he's got a little something extra in him too. Anyway he's a skinny little thing, he always has been, when he was at the vets I queried this and they said he actual weight was fine but that he might always just be a lean looking dog and as long as he was bright, had a shiny coat and didn't lose more weight he was fine (he was also wormed then too). We have been away for the weekend and have come back and I think he has lost a bit more weight, he looks extremely lean now so I am wondering if there is a food specifically to put weight on dogs? He is currently fed harringtons natural dog food which other than not adding on any weight has been great as he can also be a giddy kipper and the likes of bakers and pedigree wind him up.

Thanks

Add oily fish to his diet..........

Look at better kibble (bakers etc is quite frankly pants) with a higher meat content...... harringtons whilst not the worst is far from "meaty"

Maybe look for an alternative kibble here

Thanks for the reply. We struggle to find the balance between him not pooing 500 times a day and both dogs not bouncing off the walls although we are coming to realise they will have to be fed differently as the other one could live on fresh air while the youngest obviously needs something extra. We are also really struggling to get him toilet trained so starting to wonder if it is all connected so going to book a health check at the vets to be on the safe side anyway but will definitely have a look through the kibble options, what I forgot to state earlier is that his harringtons is mixed in with half a tin of dog meat also.

When you say feed oily fish....where do you get this from? Sorry if that's a really stupid question

Things like sardines/mackerel in tins from the supermarket!

Maybe try and get him on a grain free diet- many dogs struggle with a diet high in grains.

Supermarket makes sense :) I will give that a go.

I will have a proper look at the list of kibble tonight and see if I can find one with low grain. If left anywhere with food he will eat whatever he can get (including 3 doggie christmas stockings, which he managed to steal) most of the time making him poorly. So its as though he's really hungry but doesnt seem to put weight one.

have you tried a raw diet? Ive tried many things for putting weight on and had by far the best results with lamb mince. I get mine from Berriewoods.

Yes he is neutered but this didn't seem to make a bit of difference to his weight. To be honest I haven't considered a raw diet, mainly because my friends GSD's used to be on it and it used to make them stink.

What tinned food are you using and what amounts are you feeding?
What does he weight and how tall is he (to the withers)?

Have you tried tinned tripe & chips? This is a diet that suits "box walkers" in boarding that bounce all their weight off and it is easy to digest.

Switching the kibble to one without corn (maize) or wheat will help and a higher quality food meand more is digested so less pooing. You do have to balance this with gut action.

Naturediet puppy is another way to go. It is complete and palatable and you can easily see how much he is eating.

Raw takes a bit more planning but it should not make a dog stink.
