It looks more like a squiffy loss of use from that pic. Can you take a side on square pic of the whole freeze mark? I didn't realise from your other thread it was placed under the freeze mark number. Did you try farmkey?

Hopefully the previous owners will be able to tell you why or what it is.

I made a thread about this symbol the other day and people were saying no its not a LOU, could be a breeding brand. I don't no about all this LOU so im clueless on this sort of stuff, to be honest im not bothered if she is as she was brought as a companion and light hack, but if it is i need to find out the injury before i even contemplate riding her. I'll ring farmkey tomorrow, i've already booked the physio in case i can't find out to have a look at her.

Here is a better picture

Oh ps, there is nothing in the passport to say LOU, do they even stamp the passport when there LOU??.

I'm sorry to confirm that I don't know of any welsh stud who brand their stock. It most certainly looks like a loss of use brand to me. My friends horse also had the same brand and the insurance company insisted on it being done before they paid my friend, I've just asked her about her passport and it was NOT stamped, I suggest you also put a post on the welsh pony and cob society Facebook page with the same picture and question.

I commented on the other thread but that pic makes it look completely different I'm afraid. I didn't know it was placed under a freeze mark (it is definitely a freezemark not a brand) from the other thread. That's where a loss of use is placed. I would say I'd be surprised if it is not loss of use and you should be able to find out from farmkey I would think.

It is a bit squiffy but I reckon it would be clearer if clipped off, she might have moved when they did it or something and its a bit squint.

Hi thanks for the reply's it is def a loss of use i have contacted farmkey, and may have traced the old owner waiting on a phone call now to find out why she was stamped as farmkey not got a reason on file so hopefully i will find out soon x

Maybe? well hopefully lol would be nice and simple like that but were see, she is sound and carrying a bit of weight but she is very clicky so could be something else, i'll update when i know more x

It's a shame really that the info has not been passed along with her. You wonder how the previous owner could not know about it unless totally ignorant to what it was and it wasnt pointed out by the seller he bought her from.

Glad she has landed on her feet with you now however :)

Thanks FfionWinnie, I have spoken to the old owners and it was a fractured pelvis and sacrum, she was brought as a family pony and kept going lame, they paid for further investigation, she was box rested for a year and still never some sound, she was then given away last year as a companion, they are giving permission to the vets today so i can have copys and as much information as i want x

Your mare is so very lucky to have ended up with you and thank god for the loss of use mark. I bought my daughter the most wonderful ISH and he passed a vetting the only problem we had was he was very needle shy and the vet just could not get bloods. We didn't know beforehand that he was needle shy and we knew the owners so carried on and bought him. We had a super year with him doing showjumping and eventing. He went lame and to cut a very long story short he went to Rossdales where it was discovered he had badly broken his pelvis in the past with considerable damage to a stifle too. They concluded that due to the amount of damage he had probably been involved in a road accident in his past. This did not happen with his previous owners so they too had bought him without knowing. We think the reason he was so needle shy is that most likely he had been through lameness investigations in the past and then sold on. I paid £5000 for him and we lost everything when he had a hoon in the field last year and fractured the damaged stifle. If only he had a brand of some sort we could have been saved all the heartache and he could have gone to a hacking home (the lady we bought him from was a happy hacker) rather than a competition home. The saddest thing is he adored jumping and never once stopped bless him, his brain was fab but his body let him down

Neddy that is so sad!!!

Yes it's absolutely heartbreaking :( it's a shame that there isn't some sort of stipulation by insurance companies to brand them to let people know they have been subject of a large claim (even if they've not claimed loss of use) There are so many horses out there that are sold on with problems like this and it's not fair on the horses or the new owners.

My lad was bought from a dealer by his previous owner, I have the original advert as his previous owner gave me everything she had, including full clinical history whilst she owned him. She only rode him on a quiet hack maybe a couple of times a week which I feel is why he didn't break down sooner.

If the person who originally sold him had (for the horses sake) declared he was only suitable for light hacking then he wouldn't have been asked to be a competition horse by ourselves. The trouble is he wouldn't have been worth as much I suppose!!

My vet had a very frank chat with me after he was diagnosed and said she had another client in a similar position and she had decided to rehome her horse as a companion. Sadly it had very tragic consequences when he was then sold on a few weeks later as a "competition horse" by the person who had bought him for peanuts supposedly as a companion for their retired horse!!

By the time it was discovered, the horse had been passed to various different homes with what was thought to be behavioural issues and his final journey tragically was traced....he had gone to France :( :(

After that horrific story I vowed I would never rehome my lad and would keep him for the rest of his life and if for some reason I couldn't, I would have PTS as I wouldn't have been able to bear the thought of him ending up in France :( Once you've sold them, you have no control as to their fate.

I think Milly has fallen on her feet with her new owner that she had taken such care to find out Millys past. I do however, find it very sad that her previous owners didn't put their name & number in the passport with details of her loss of use claim :( The OP should be praised for her desire to trace Millys old owners.

Good luck with her :)

Thanks you neddynesbitt, thats very kind of you. i originally rescued her from a man, well paid him peanuts as she had and abscess on her face, embedded head collar and bad feet, i couldn't leave her there. I had originally had a backup plan and booked a physio to see if she had had an injury as she was clicky when she walked. I did some digging, he also never registered the passport, but there were 3 other people registered, i tried the last owner on record in the passport, i phoned around all day Monday with insurance company's, vets and farmkey, farmkey never had a reason on file, insurance companies couldn't give me any information due to data protection, it was only by luck i phoned a friend disappointed and said 'that's it i'm never going to know' :(, , but she asked for the girls name and text a few horsey friends, and within an hour i had found her. She is a lovely lady the mare was very well loved and no expense was spared, she was gifted away as a companion. The injury was 3 years ago, she has phoned the vets to give permission for them to talk to me and the vets have transferred all her information to my file so we can now discuss what happened. x
