Tryptophan/5 HTP! (Calming supplement, where to buy it neat?)

Given that my horse is a total and complete idiot sometimes, we decided to try him on a calmer. Unbeknownst to me, my YM put him on it last Tuesday/Wednesday and I had a dressage lesson on Friday in which he was unbelievably well behaved and actually concentrating and cooperating (he normally loses focus very quickly and spent the lesson before last jumping around, spinning, rearing and generally being stupid).

It also is unusual in that he doesn't get lazy, but is actually nice and relaxed and going forward into a contact for once! Still get the odd spook but he settles quickly and I can feel him actually keeping a lid on it instead of just losing his mind.

Having looked at said supplement, it consists of Tryptophan and vitamin B1 mostly. I know the vitamins are essential for it to work, which is fine, but the calmer itself is expensive. The plan is to keep him on it permanently for a couple of months, and double dose before our next show (only two more for the year) to see if it helps, because we are really starting to reach our wits end with the way he behaves at shows sometimes.

So, having looked around, I think possible the best idea is to use the neat version of tryptophan or 5HTP (which is apparently better?). But, where can it be bought? We can get capsules and the like designed for human consumption - would this work?? Am trying now to find the concentration of the horse version to see whether it's comparable.

Needs to be able to be bought online if its in the UK. That way I can get relatives to bring it out over Xmas! :)

It's beena year since I was looking but I never could get hold of the neat product.
B-Kalm and Super Kalm paste are the two horsey ones that I know have it the super kalm being the stronger and more expensive of the two.

For daily suppliemts Blue Chip Karma and So-Kalm Plus both contain it along with magnesium, again the So-Kalm version is appreantly the stronger.

Ours are on it too as I was blown away to find something that reduced the less desirable character traits, yet didn't dull them!

At the moment they are on the topspec calmer (the dose it recommends gives much more l-tryptophan than the super calm paste we used so we have cut the dosage and only feed 1/3rd and find that the effect it gives is perfect).

For a cheaper choice you can feed it like this http://www.myprotein.com/uk/products/impact_whey_isolate You would need to feed v little as it contains 1.4% l-tryptophan so a little would last ages, and also give a negligable effect on the total protein ration fed to your horse.

Equifeast's WinningEdge products has a big dose Tryptophan in, you can up the dose of it if you speak to the team there. They are fab, they even provided me with neat Tryptophan to find out what levels I needed.

Totally agree they have done the same for us

Ok, having contacted the people who make the calmer I'm using - it's 66% Tryptophan. So I'd need either pure Tryptophan and give maybe 3/4's of the dose, or something with what seems like a pretty big amount.

ElleJS, do you know how much is in WinningEdge? I've looked on the website, but a bit stuck! I live overseas, so will struggle a bit to try lots of things, as I'll need to have it ordered for my brother to bring out in about a month :)
