I have been working for a while now, to get the weight off my stupidly fat cob. General consensus is that he has another 50kg to loose. He's also barefoot. He's had his front shoes off for a year (never had backs on). He's on hay from a trickle net and was on pure feed balancer but for the last 4 months has been on formula4feet.
He's never lame, but can get foot sore. He has cavello boots for hacking out which are brilliant. He has a tendency to drag his toes when he is feeling lazy which is now forbidden!! He is seen by a farrier who has a good rep but is definitely more shoe orientated.

I'd really appreciate your thoughts because I am no expert!

They look good and if he's sound then you should keep doing what you are doing as it's obviously working. :)

PS. I do wonder if his thick fur/feathers made it hard for people to see his pastern angle and this is what concerned them.

Looks good to me. Being unshod gives you the best chance of monitoring his sugar status. If he seems footy, check for thrush and reduce his sugar intake, either by soaking his hay or mixing it with oat straw. These cobs seem to be able to live on fresh air, don't they ?
The fitter he is, the better able he is, the more efficient his metabolism is. Therefore exercise every day is probably the best thing you can do. If time is short, even 15 minutes long lining over poles or briskly walking over a couple of poles on the lunge, is better than nothing at all. The poles mean he has to pick his feet up, rather than mooching along.
When he is trimmed, use some tubi grip or some old tights to pull the feather out of the farrier's way. Not only will the farrier thank you for not getting covered in mud, but he'll be able to see that the foot is balanced,
