What's tumeric like on very sensitive stomachs?
My 11 year old collie has severe arthritis and has been on anti-inflammatories for years. She also has the maximum dose of codiene and has just had paracetamol added in (it's safe at the correct dosage and this is on the vets advice).
She had her anti-inflammatories changed a couple of months ago because her liver is starting to deteriorate a bit so she was changed to a more liver friendly one however it has not agreed with her and she has had problems on and off with severe diahorea, including blood. She was changed back to the old one (loxicam) however that seems to also be setting of her stomach problems (the vets did think she might be sensitive to that now). Once this last bout has settled down she'll get one more try at the loxicam at a lower dose to begin with to see if she can tolerate it but if not then we don't really have any anti-inflammatory route left to go and if she does react because of how severe it is and the presence of blood we won't carry on with them. Unfortunately we need something else to deal with pain added in instead as although she's bouncy and want's to play and go for short walks on an evening / after lying down she's struggling to get up and is obviously in pain - I won't keep her going if she doesn't have a good quality of life and if I can't control her pain then she doesn't have a good quality of life.
I would like to give tumeric a try but am worried about the effect on her stomach. She has also become a very fussy eater and I'm struggling to get her to eat her food properly - she's lost about 2 kg over the last 2 months - she was 21 kg (used to struggle to keep her weight down), last weight at the vets a week or so ago was only 19.05kg and I think she's dropped a bit more - so how do they normally take to eating it as anything meds wise mixed in her food and she won't touch it at all (she gets her kibble with tuna mixed through it which is one of her favourites - she also has quite a range of food intolerances so I have to be careful what I use to make it yummy for her to eat)

Her current meds list is
codeine
paracetamol
green lipped muscle (glucosamine)
also on omprazole to get her stomach to heal

Sorry for the essay, any advice etc welcome

I would check with your vet. I'm a
student vet nurse and we had a client ask about tumeric the other day, the vets werent entirely sure and had a discussion about it and a lot of vets there were worried about it causing problems in dogs and cats. I don't know what the answer was once they had researched it but definitely one to read up on\talk to your vet about. Sorry that's not much help is it! I will see if I can ask tomorrow.

I don't know about turmeric, I haven't tried it on my dogs, I have got a friend that has and she says it's brilliant, but not sure about dogs with sensitive tummies.

I can recommend Back on Track, I have arthritis in my toes, but since I have bought a pair of their socks and inner-soles I haven't had any trouble with my feet. They do beds, coats, etc for dogs. http://www.backontrack-uk.co.uk/dog-products-info.htm
