Has anyone ever experienced a tumour in their horses foot, which caused a pedal bone fracture? My horse has just been diagnosed via x-rays with a pedal bone fracture, and they think a tumour could be present and have caused it. I now have to wait 4 weeks to see if the area they think is a tumour grows, via more x-rays. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this, and what was the recovery process like if so?

My lad is currently recovering from surgery to remove a keratoma (a benign growth) from his foot. It had caused a small amount of damage to the pedal bone, though not a fracture. It's fairly straightforward surgery, but they've had to remove a fair amount of hoof wall and internal structure, so recovery is slow.

He's been on box rest for 6 weeks now. He has a hospital plate fitted and his foot is still bandaged to make sure nothing gets in. I have to change the dressings every other day. He's back to see the vet who did the surgery next week and have his shoe changed, and I'm hoping he will start to be allowed a little bit of turnout then. I reckon it's going to take 9 months or so for the hoof to fully recover. It's a bit early days to be able to say more about the recovery, and I couldn't find a lot of info on line, but so far it all seems to be going well.
