tumour on the penis - advice please!

Hi! Our pet pony has been diagnosed with cancer on his penis. We have been told the option is a part amputation. Can anyone let me know their experiences with this op - I'm in a quandry as to what to do as have heard some bad things about it and just want to do the best for him.
 
Many years ago my pony had this, and he had to have part of his penis amputated. He recovered very quickly and went on to lead a full, active life with only half his manhood!
 
Thank you for the upbeat comment I had only heard negative things til then - such as it's likely to go wrong & he'll have to be put down anyway so it's good to hear from someone who's had a good experience. He's 16 so really has still got a good life ahead of him hopefully
