I have a female Shar-Pei that is 8 years old, she developed a tumour on her elbow that I had removed, the vet discovered another tumour on her windpipe which they successfully removed. The results came back from the lab, they were malignant. The elbow tumour was not the same family as the throat tumour. However it is more than likely that the cancer has spread to her lungs so her life expectancy is not long. I was wondering if any of you have experienced this, especially with dogs with black pigment in their mouths, Chows etc.

At the moment she is quite happy and eating, walking, but at night she does do horrid retching coughs which could be due to the stitches in her throat. Any feed back would be gratefully received. I just wonder how long I have with this lovely dog.

Have no experience with cancer in Shar-Peis/black mouthed dogs but am very sorry to hear that. My young Flat-coat passed away due to a malignant splenic tumour a couple of years ago. It was successfully removed, he was given up to 6 months but died 1 month after diagnosis after collapsing on his morning walk. It's a horrible situation, just make sure that you make the most of the time that you have left with her.

I am sorry for your loss FlaxenPony, I am thinking that the throat and spleen are not a good place to get a tumour as it is spread quickly. I think a month in this dogs life is a generous time span. But I will savour every minute.

hi i lost my dog to stomach cancer last week ,his main symptom was a retching cough and some vomiting . he was ill for 4 weeks before we had to pts because the tumour was so large .previously to this he was very healthy. sorry youve had such bad news but i would say you should have a chat with ur vet.x

Don't know about throats but splenic tumours are almost always malignant I think, not sure why

I am sorry archiepoo that you too have lost your dog to cancer. I have of course spoken to my vet, I just wanted to ask on here about others experiences and get some idea of the time I have left with her. Vets do not commit themselves.xx
