Have just read through a few threads, and it seems like some of you have had some success feeding turmeric to stiff / arthritic horses.

So please, share your experiences! I'm doing some research on behalf of a friend. She has an older gelding (he's somewhere between 20-25) who is arthritic in his back legs. In his prime he was mostly doing RC activities and hacking. He's still worked lightly now (mostly hacking or short sessions in the school) and gets a danilon every other day. He gets as much turnout as possible to keep him moving and he's generally quite bright in himself (especially after a hack!), although some days he is stiffer than others.

Anyway, she is looking at introducing a supplement into his diet to try and keep him as comfortable as possible. He is currently fed on a veteran mix, chaff and sugar beet, with a scoop of cortaflex. Don't know much about the effectiveness of cortaflex, but anyway.. she had thought about adding devil's claw, but not read up as much on that (if anyone has any experiences of that too, would be good!).

Now I don't mean to suggest that she will take him completely off the danilon, as he is doing okay on it- but just interested to hear your experiences of feeding turmeric. As it's so cheap, I think she will go ahead and introduce it (with veterinary advice, of course). Would just be nice to hear some first hand accounts! How have you gone about introducing it? No doubt it'll turn his handsome grey face bright yellow.. new kind of hi viz?

I used tumeric for a while , didn,t seem to do much , have had better results with boswellia which I get from Pegasus health.
I been able to reduce his danilon by half since using this and I am hopeful that he might soon may not need the danilon!

Don't know about turmeric... but Apple Cider Vinegar is very good for joint health. Second Boswellia or Devils Claw perhaps.
