Where do you all buy turmeric (for horses) from? I currently buy mine from tesco at £1.99 for 400g but was wondering if I could get it any cheaper elsewhere?

Go to an Indian or Chinese store. You can most stuff there by the kilo for a fraction of the price!!

How much do you feed though and has anything noticed any difference since being on it??

(just to add in there - oh I am assuming this is for joint benefits??)

:-)

Yes it is, and I'm not entirely sure how much you *should* feed. I give them approx 25g a day (unfortunately I use a scoop which levelled off is 10ml - I feed 3 scoops so at '30ml').

And tbh I'm not sure whether its making a difference or not, but as its fairly cheap, it's likely to have antioxidant properties too (well, according to things I've read on the Internet) so I'm hoping it won't do any harm...

Thanks for the Chinese shop ideas, £3.80 for a kilo is better than £2 for 400g!

It's really good for sore throats too. Disgusting so do mix well with a honey & ginger concoction...

I also read that it is good for respiratory systems too. I changed a few things last year for my oldie, including trying barefoot and he moved better and coughed a lot less than he had the previous winter. Not sure how much Tumeric had an impact but I am going to keep using it.

The good thing about turmeric is that you can't overdose it. I should imagine you are feeding too much if you horse refuses to eat it.... have you actually tasted it? Bleurgh :o But yellow kisses are the best!

My left hand is still resembling something out of the Simpsons after getting slobbered on last night! No matter how much I scrub my hand...!

Noodle bug - I did feed seaweed and rose hips combined, but my horse wasn't fond of it!

Ooh no bad advice! You can!! Don't give too much... Like anything, too much can be bad for the gut. Even human guts.

Just be careful with herbs and spices. Too much of anything is never a good thing...

Between 20-50ml scoopfull is enough.

If not, good old Apple Cider Vinegar does wonders for joints.

Have given horses ACV for a long time and never not seen a stiff horse improve.

Just to resurrect this, I've been recommended to feed a tablespoon of this to my mare who has arthritis in one hock (she's 16.3hh) tonight. They also said to bulk buy from asian shop with postage (which is fairly quick I believe) less than £13 delivered. Here's the link for anyone interested: http://www.theasiancookshop.co.uk/bulk-turmeric-haldi-powder-5kg-4207-p.asp

Tallyho where do you get your ACV from and how much do you feed please? Tried some from Morissons and my girl was really reluctant to eat her food - turned her nose up at it.

The stuff sold in supermarkets is too "cleaned up" to do any good - you need the stuff with "mother". You can get a pump to fit the 5 ltr and then I feed 3 squirts (approx 90-100ml) but add it a bit at a time (you might need to add some dried mint or something to disguise the taste). Simple and effective. I've now started giving it to my nearly 14 year old dalmatian as well and noticed a big difference in just a couple of weeks :-)
