I have been given a 5yr old 16hh TB mare, she has come from the track & was race fit but not fast enough over distance. I have had her at home since Xmas but due to snow etc have only ridden her a few times, she was very good but did go backwards when asked to stand! She has a lovely nature, is a little skinny & could do with filling out!
I am not sure wether to turn her away till summer giving her time to mature & fill out & then start a fresh or do I continue riding her a couple of times a week?
She is due to be shod this week so if I do decide to turn her away I will have her shoes off.

If it was me i would turn her away and let her be a horse again, let her relax with some friends for a few months then bring her back in and restart her schooling

Meant to add, wouldnt turn her away and forget about her,i would still have her in a routine of coming in to be groomed etc

IMO she is best turned away with plenty of turnout with other horses (even just one or two) who can help her learn to be a horse, and to let her body and mind grow up a bit before you ask her to start learning something new.

Many thanks for your quick reply!
Where we live is quite close to urban area so we always stable at night but whatever the weather we turn out during the day, so she will have a good routine & plenty of attention. There is also lots going on around us so she will see new things & will be kept well occupied!
