I am going to Australia for a month in October, I have recently lost my sharer who was going to care for my girl. I don't want to get another sharer so not sure whether to find a place to turn my girl away for the month or to send her away for schooling. She is 4yrs old at the moment, broken begining of March and working well - mainly bit of gentle schooling, gentle hacking and bits and bobs.
If I turned her away I would either need to pay someone to go and look after her each day or put her on another yard... as yard doesn't have any full livery.

Not sure what to do???

A lot of it depends on how much you want to spend. A months schooling at a training yard will cost a great deal. Being turned away for a month will do her no harm at all but obviously you will come back to an unfit horse.

I think I am a bit worried about coming home to an unfit horse especially in winter - I think it may be easier to maintain her fitness if she is kept in work. I was fine when booked holiday as had sharer then but now worrying me. also what would happen if she was injured whilst on schooling livery?

I dont think that turning her away would necessarily be a bad thing - I am both for and against turning away youngsters after they have been broken. However, a month isnt really turning her away - personally I think if you are going t turn a baby away I think it needs to be for a few months. PLus come october she will have been broken in about 7 months so I reckon you might aswell keep her going!

As for her being in jured, myself and my sister have our own business doing full and part liverys, breaking, schooling, pre training racehorses etc. and our ploicy is that we are not responsible for any injurys to the horse whilst in our care. Howedver, if one is injured we will deal with everything ourselves, but the bill goes to the owner. I really wouldnt worry about tht though - shes probably no more likely to unjure herself if she goes away than she is in the field.
We do insist though that the horse is insured for public liability, and encourage vets fee too, but thats up to the owner.

D o what you think is best for her though, but I persoanlly would want her to keep her going. The change of scenery will probably do her no end of good too!

As a still relatively newly broken 4 year old, she wouldn't need an 'advanced' schooling yard at £150+ a week - just a good yard that KNOWS youngsters that can keep her quietly ticking over with hacking and a little basic schooling.

A responsible yard would take full care to minimise the risk of any injuries - and in the unlikely event they DO occur - treat them promptly and properly. We have a combined business policy which includes Public Liability for ALL horses in our care.

That type of livery - stabled at night, day turnout and riding by experienced staff, and ALL feed and care other than vet & farrier would cost you just under £100 a week - with e-mail updates to Australia if you wanted them!
