Turn on forehand inhand?

By cultivating your horses 'move over' buttons. My 2 year old has grasped the basics and moves over at the politest touch, and has started to understand to move just his shoulders or just his bum over. You would need to stand at horses shoulder and ask him to move only his rear end away, lots of praise for the smallest of steps in the right direction until he gets the idea and responds to lighter touches. Once he understands what you want from him you can start to move his buttons closer to his girth area, in preparation for ridden lateral work. Long reining can help with flexibility and bend, and can teach them to respond to feel from the outside lunge line, which would help with lateral work too. Have fun!

I work with my little old 12hh a lot inhand in the school as I can't ride him and he needs to keep his brain ticking over. He's become awesome at turn on forehand and learns new stuff incredibly quickly. Having a supply of pony nuts in my pockets probably helps! I just started by nudging his hindquarters with one hand, holding his headcollar and turning his head accordingly and being ready to halt him if he attempted to walk his front legs. I did it one small movement at a time, paused and rewarded and it built from there. Now you simply have to stand by his shoulder, bring his head a touch round and simply say 'turn'. Front legs stay firmly planted and he can do it pretty darn quick! Clever pony:D
