Hi my horse is having its neck medicated - its 3 years since last done but i cant remember if they have to stay in for 48hrs after or if this only applies if legs are medicated due to the risk of laminitis. Thanks.

Why don’t you ask the vet when they medicate it...
Yes I will but I just wondered if anyone knew before hand as I will have to make arrangements for full day care and change my plans for the rest of the week if that's the case, that's all.

When mine had steroid injected in his feet he had to stay in for a week, I think some vets have different views on it though so it just depends on there opinion.

They have to stay in 2-3 days, a friend always turns hers out the same day but I followed vet advice.

My gelding had his neck medicated in December and this was that surgeons advice.

Where is the arthritis in his neck?

Thanks for that, I for some reason thought they could go out the next day with neck. C4 and C6 from recollection - she was last done 3 years ago.

Just ask your vet.
IME opinion varies, I’ve never had a neck done - legs always used to be 48h but these days my vets have them in overnight and out the next morning, apparently no supportive evidence to require extended box rest

It wasn't due to the laminitis risk as much, the vet told me it was so the steriod stayed within the correct area. He explained if they were to go out in the field galloping around, bending etc before it had settled, the steriod could move/be absorbed into the body and less effective.

Don't quote me on it, but he said something along those lines. This vet specializes in internal medicine going around the world medicating 4* Olympic eventers and national dressage horses (he was telling me about these cases and how they went on to compete again) so really knew his stuff.

May be gobblers, but I followed his advice.
