Right, Nitty has to have something as I am thoroughly sick of her diva-ish reaction to every little knock and graze.

My problem is that they are usually on her hocks or knees. Is there anything I can turn her out in which is going to cover these bits when she decides to fling herself on the floor?

I would be a bit worried turning out in knee boots and I don't think she'd actually be able to walk in hock boots.

I jokingly said I'm going to put her out with travelling boots on but actually that is probably what she needs the little oik!

Do these actually work?

I have never used t/o boots because I am worried about wet legs not being able to dry out, and then causing no end of problems from mud fever, right the way through to skin coming away akin to if wet bandages are left on for too long. (aware of that being slightly melodramatic!)

Saying that I was looking at some turnout chaps a little while ago and I think the ones I likes the most were by equilibrium. I dont think that would help you as from memory they did not go up over the joints!

Oooh how funny - I read this and thought "hmm maybe i will suggest the westropp boots to Jess but not sure if she would like them as they are mostly brushing boots" then I clicked your link!

I use these for hacking - no one wants to have to give in to youngsters pratting around on gravel / roads/ stony forest hilly tracks because they're scared the horse might fall down and break its knees (in the old fashioned sense of a broken knee) so we use these. In my experience they stay on well, even on horses with a lot of action. My mare does like to rub her face on the top of the knee bit for fun but she doesn't seem to mind wearing them.

I've never turned out in them, no particular reason why not, just don't tend to use boots in the field as mine either go out separately or just the two of them, so I can't comment on that bit but I've given them a good test in very wet / boggy conditions and have no complaints.

(ps - perhaps what Nitty actually needs is some kind of inflated padded hamster ball type protection chamber?)

What Nitty really needs is a bullet but as I've spend nearly £4000 in the last year mending her I'd resent the wasted investment!

She only goes out with BH and he isn't particularly playful but even on her own she'll charge about like a thing possessed.

They aren't hugely expensive, perhaps I'll give them a try. I don't really like turning out with boots on tbh but something has to give as the way things stand I'm lucky if I can work her for more than three weeks without her breaking herself again. I am fond of her but not fond enough to finance her lay-about lifestyle. I would prefer it if she at least tried to earn her keep!

***Brown Horse chuckles to himself that his plan of telling Nitty porky pies about how she should run around like a mad thing because you prefer horses with spark appears to be working. He smiles and pictures himself living with Jess for many years to come.....****

HAHA.

My first thought was those westropp boots too, though I've never used them myself.

Fergie has been turned out in travel boots though, for reasons I won't go into... One of his field mates tried to eat them :p

I could come tomorrow evening. I have a horsebox. You're around Cambridge aren't you?

Haha as IF you would! I was thinking today though that I could possibly manage a third but would prefer a gelding....would BH make a small hunter? I already have a small riding horse and a small hack you see.....

No unfortunately BH is far too hideous to be a show horse! He is about 10 miles long and has short stumpy legs and a big head! lol

Nitty was supposed to be my large hack but unfortunately she now has a rather thick hock! So she'll have to be something else instead. I'm sure we'll find some other job for her to do :)

I have these and have used them on a tb and section D and found then turned around after a while, so protected the outside rather than front of the knee.
Other than that they're fab and have lasted well.

My boy is the same, so clumsy! But I always worry about legs overheating and causing tendon issues so I use equilibrium close contact chaps. They are waterproof as well :)
