Ok, I am now asking myself what best to do: mare has been on box rest with wounded foot due to sharp stone 10 days ago. Now got ok from vet that bandage can come off and horse can go out again. However, I want to do things gradually partly because I think foot may still be slightly tender (not sure, but better careful than not) and also she has suffered from azoturia before so need to get her back out gradually.
Thu and Friday this week I am only able to get up the yard before work and am on limited time …

So, what would you do:

1. Take bandage off tomorrow (thu) and turn horse out then get girl who works at yard bring her in after a couple of hours (risk is that horse may not want to be caught which puts me in awkward position having ‘hired’ somebody to do the ‘dirty’ work), do the same thing on Friday.

2. Take bandage off in the morning and put her in horse walker while I am mucking out, then bring back in, check foot myself and leave stabled (do same thing on Friday) – then turnout on Saturday when I can be there to see how she behaves –

What do you guys reckon what would you do? I shall make this a poll:

I would turn the horse out, but use tape and pads to keep the foot clean for another week.

When I have had a similar problem and taken away the foot protection the problem has occured again quite rapidly and I've been back to square one.

In the future, I would just protect the foot and turn out from day one, if the injury was'nt too bad.
