Sorry this is a bit of a long fairly self indulgent story about how I ended up with Zak (my horse of a life time... so far anyway

).

This all started when we were on holiday when I was 13. My Mom came downstairs asking me if I remembered a foal born in the field next-door to us 3.5 yrs previously as she had had a dream that we owned him. Now this is the really weird part as about a week after we returned from holiday the breeder of this horse (who vaguely new my Dad but hadn't seen him for a couple of years) came to our house asking if we were interested in buying one of his youngsters and yep you've guessed it, it was the same horse my Mom had dreamt about.
So we went to see him and he was awful...he had not really been handled since he was a foal. I said I didn’t want him. However my Mom sort of persisted that we went to see him a few more times and in an odd way I sort of fell for him -looking back at the pictures I have no idea why lol. So we bought him and took him to a yard I could have help with him. No one could believe what we had bought and said it was a ridiculous idea (which to be fair it was) to have him. No one held back telling me he was ugly and far too much horse for me one lady said he reminded her of a wild cow. Well to cut an even longer story a bit shorter I persisted with him I taught him to lead (no mean feet considering he is 16.3hh and I was 13 - he used to drag me round like a rag doll). I lunged him and backed him. Then the YO brought him on for a couple of weeks then he was back to me and we never really looked back. It has definitely not been an easy ride with him and for the first few years it was very lairy. He used to have me off weekly but I just refused point blank to sell him even though my Mom said she had made a real mistake and if I sold him I could have any horse I wanted, I just wouldn't let him go.
Ten years on he has turned out to be the horse of my life. I used to do a lot of BSJA and PC/RC open eventing with him. I now am into dressage but as he loves to jump I have done some BE PN’s with him, winning or being placed in most. He is also fairly successful at BD although he would rather be jumping!!
I adore him.
I've never really believed in fate but this was just so odd how it all worked out as without my Mom having the dream I don’t think she would have bothered looking a second time. Looking back I can see it was rather more luck then judgement that I was never seriously hurt. We have learnt so much together and I would never ever part with him.
Sorry I know it’s very long with very little point (I did warn you it was self indulgent lol).

Has anyone else had a horse which was so wrong for them in the start but turned out to be completely right? Would love to hear stories if so.

Here are some pics of him....

your mum must be a lot happier now about the decision to buy him lol after the stress of seeing you go through the lairy years lol

I just love stories like this, just goes to prove that a hell of lot hard work, persistence and most importantly good old fashioned faith proves to be something very specially indeed in the end, life is not plain sailing and neither are some horses.

I must admit you wouldn't think it was the same horse from the first picture, what a cracker he turned out to be, in this case not just a diamond but a rare blood diamond!

Well done, you have every right to be proud as punch.

Wow, what a fantastic story & your horse is stunning! Well done for believing in him - he looks to have repaid all your faith in him tenfold!

I love this story! Have had a few 'issues' recently with my boy and been told many times I shouldn't keep him....but this sort of story gives me hope so thank you!
He is such a gorgeous boy and well done on producing him to compete like that - you must be so proud x

What an inspirational story, and what a stunning horse! As others have said, well done for persevering. What's his breeding?

He's IDxTB not actually sure of the actual lines though. Thanks for all the lovely comments. I've actually just had a lesson on him and he was a star so is really in the good books today ;-)

I think he is scrummy

I would not have recognised him from the first pics either.... he looks a bit hairy and common in them (sorry)

But he is beautiful now

Good for you for sticking with him
