Just out of interest how long would you suggest turning away a recently backed Welsh D, rising 4yrs. I was thinking until next March. Is that too long or not enough?
Welsh D's take ages to mature I believe (mine didn't stop physically and mentally until he was 8!). I'm not a big fan of turning away for too long - personally I'd just give him 3 months so that'd be February. But then it might be more practical to start again in March as the weather starts to get better of course.
Same situation with my rising 4 sec d, but like above il probs start mine back into in march, maybe just light work in feb just to ease her back in gently.
Im doing the same - welsh d rising 4, turning away until March time, lighter nights (work full time), hopefully bit better weather.. He is due his dentist check early March so will wait till that is done.. He is currently going through a major growth spurt so hope fully will have levelled out a bit by then
We should start a Welsh D rising 4 club - share our progress/ pictures etc
How much have you all done with your sec d's. I literally got round to walking few trots then had to take her out of work due to her having problem with wolf teeth, have ridden her couple of times since wolf teeth have come out, but never got round to taking her for a hack out ( although she's done plenty of road work as she pulled a cart with previous owner )
Mine was long lined for a few weeks, backed, did some regular hacks out in company, just walking with the odd trot. Within this he did a few very light sessions in the school, just getting the steering and transitions. He then had ten days off due to having his wolf teeth out, came back for a couple of weeks, popped a tiny jump had his first canter around the stubble field and then turned away. Did about 9 weeks in all, leaving him till after next dentist visit so dosent have to have a break in the middle again... He was an absolute star really, he wont be four till June so not in a hurry...
Thanks for replies. Sounds like we are all thinking alike. We have only had our boy a week and we are doing some refinement on his groundwork! Lots of pressure and release which he is picking up really quickly. Have found out he is scared stiff of bikes so am going to put one near his field then gradually put it in with him. Bless him. plenty to keep us busy over the winter.
i wish I had goton round to doing more with my mare before I turned her away, but one thing after another has put a dampener on things.
lattingford.... I'm doing this with my girl lots of pressure release being learned, starting to develop abit of attitude at the moment, but once that's established I will start walking her out inhand out on the roads. They'll keep us all busy this winter
