hello again!

does anyone elses horse turn in on the right rein only, only when lunging, pinning their ears back?

as said in my post on the vet forum about weeing and pooing, my mare used to suffer from stomach ulcers. my mctim chiro said another client of hers, their horse also turned in on the right rein only when lunging - it was scoped and showed ulcers!

as said previously, my horse has been clear of stomach ulcers, but perhaps the condition is returning? could this be linked to the weeing problem?

she is perfect lunging on the left rein - the second you change to the right rein and try to send her off she spins in, stops with ears back.

am trying to break the habit, but it's so clearly only a right rein problem...

arrgh help!

if the horse is showing ulcers then I would put the horse on Coligon.

sounds more like shes being rude, on the lunge and taking the peed.

But as youhave said she is/ has suffered from ulcers so I would get her on Coligon liquid you will be AMAZED

i have never heard of coligon - will look it up - at the moment i'm using aloe juice to see if that settles her stomach.

if she was only being "rude" then why would she only do it on the right rein, yet be perfect on the left?

its just very strange - she also runs her bottom lip along the sand/rubber in the school on the right rein when lunging - really dragging her lip in the sand as if she stretch her neck/back. she has been recently checked by the mctim chiro, and everything was fine.

A couple of ideas to think about.

If like me you are quite right handed and find one rein works better for you in terms of holding ropes, lung line etc, then you are possibly giving her conflicting signals - check that you remain in a driving position on that rein and that you are not blocking her, and asking her to go at the same time which would cause frustration and displacement behaviour. Look at your position relative to the horse.

If you are concerned about ulcers then consider a completely grain free diet, and also consider feeding linseed meal which, in adition to providing a good oil source will also provide mucilage which is buffering and soothing

Hi psychick82.

Just wanted to second Nailed's post about Coligone - I am now feeding it to my old lad who has been colicy for a while with suspected ulcers, its AMAZING!

I should add that he is also having the super expensive Gastoguard at the moment too, but he has had a couple of mild colic days whilst on the Gastroguard - one syringe of Coligone and 30 mins later he was fine,

If you suspect ulcers I would strongly recommend coligone - its a fantasic (and low cost compared with the alternatives) product - I cant rate it highly enough!

Good luck

My boy always turns in on the left rein. Never put it down to anything more than him being a monster as he turns in, runs at me, bucks then stands looking like butter wouldnt melt as if to say 'i'm done now mum.' If i persist he will settle, think he just tries it on as he doesnt like lungeing!

Well lunging just on a circle has very little benefit emotionally or physically for the horse and is best avoided for other more fun forms of exercise. Horses shut down on the lunge or are driven to bad behaviour by its repetition and discomfort. You try running in a 20 m circle for 5 minutes with your head held and see how you feel. I bet you feel unconfortable pretty quick!
