Ive come to the realisation that my weeman, (now not so wee at 13 months) really dislikes being stabled. Results in door kicking, and trying to get over the door..ect ect. And at our farm, horses have to be in for winter in october, which isnt that long of!! So, im thinking of finding a field to rent and having him out 24/7 like he is now, and he really enjoys being out.
So heres my thoughts, its relatively nice now, and hes unrugged. Come the winter months when it gets really nasty. Will i be a cruel mummy to leave him out? obviously he'll be rugged as i cant have him naked, id never sleep. But do you think hed cope?

He'll live

!! My friends TB foal lived out from birth (born in the field) until last winter (nearly 5) and he has survived!!

He would cope out for the winter naked I am sure, the young uns always grow a fantastic winter coat!
The youngsters at work live out for the first 4 years of their life naked on the side of a hill. (Warmblood types, not just native ponies)

If he'll be happier then do it

If you are cruel then I am monstrous! This filly was 6 months old at the time, never, ever came indoors, she grew 2 rug sizes and 4" taller in months of this.

My four arabs all wintered out last winter - even through all that ice and frost. They've never looked better. Age ranges from 1 year to 21. It was more of a trauma for me than for them when I first took the plunge but I'd HIGHLY recommend it. At least three of mine will do the same this winter - I'll only keep the ones I want to keep working in at night just because I need the facilities the livery provides to ride in the winter and my winter field is in a different place from the livery yard. I'm in Lancashire too - the worst county in the country for finding livery yards with winter turnout.

My youngster (2yr old) lives out 24/7 in summer and although he is not out in winter as regime at yard is that all babies are in a fold yard he is not rugged up in the winter and grows a nice woolly coat to keep him warm. He is Hanoverian, bred in Germany.

He will cope fine. As long as he has ample fibre (grass, hay, haylage) he will be able to keep perfectly warm, and some rugs might be useful, although may not actually be necessary. many horses love to live out all year, so give it a go.

He'll need company though.

Absolutely he will. I'm sure he'll be fine unrugged as long as he has shelter OP.

I think I must be a little bit over protective of my arab! I worry constantly when she's out without a rug. In winter she's out during the day but in at night, I couldn't bear the thought of her being out over night in winter at all never mind without a rug. I know I'm over protective though, I convince myself that becasue she's an arab she neds more care and warming up than hardier breeds, kidding myself I know

Maybe I can live with it if it saves on bedding costs
