What do you tend to do during the summer months? I appear to be a bit unusual at my yard as most are out at night and in during the day - I prefer to let Ellie have a bit of a holiday in the summer, so I like to leave her out 24/7 as long as the weather is good. If she asks to come in, I bring her in - and also some days when it is really hot (she has no shelter in her field) then I bring her in during the day to get her out of the heat. But generally, she's out all the time!

Ditto, all ours are out 24/7 now. If they're due out at a show or something, they'll come in for the week before or something.
Other than that, 24/7 all the way from spring till late autumn! :) Easier and cheaper!

I have voted for 24/7, no shelter as although we don't have an actual field shelter, the trees and hedges do provide some shade. I don't tend to bring in unless the flies are really bad as our stables get very hot and stuffy.

Mine are all out 24/7 all year, except the mare who is due to foal and is in at night. When I was last on a livery yard, they were out at night in the summer and in during the day.

I do a bit of everything she is out most of the time with shelter but 2/3 times a week she will come in for either a few hours in the day or for the night she does come in more in the winter but its also not unusual for her to stay out 24 hours in witer as well.

Mine are out all year no matter what the weather- there is no man made shelter but there are trees and hedges. I do find in the summer its actually harder work having them out 24/7- i'd rather have them in during the day to stop them getting fat/stop them getting sunburnt and stop the flies attacking them.

Mine has no shelter at all so in the summer mainly when it is quite warm like today she is out at night and in for some hours during the day. Some days she is out 24/7. When she is in during the day she rarely eats much of her hay so I think she just has a sleep :D

Ours are out 24/7 365 days a year! And I'd have it no other way! The horses are so much happier outside. Even if we are competing the next day, they will be out. I can plait and put a hood on them overnight and they will still look great in the morning. The worst it can get is a few grass stains on hocks and they are easily washed!

I really have seen the benifits of them living out. Not only are they happier and fitter than ever before, they also are so much calmer! We had a baby come to us as a 2 yr old, she had been stabled at night and out during the day. And she was actually mad - would bite, kick, you couldnt lead her (she'd rear and try to smash your head!). But she now lives out and is an absolute diamond. My niece will bring her in from the field, she is so happy and chilled.

I'm not saying you stablers are doing it wrong - just for my horses, I would have it no other way!

During summer, out 24/7 but field restricted in size as she's a heiffer. There is shelter in the forms of hedges, but no proper field shelter. Our stables are absolutely boiling as the roof is very low.

mine is out 24/7 but he loves to come in now and again - if there are too many flies or its too hot i bring him in for a few hours - he loves it, i sometimes think hes a little loner and liked his "me time" - as previous poster says he just likes to sleep in peace and quiet

Ive just gone to 24/7 turnout, im luckily that we have them at home, they have natural shelter (tree's and hedges) and we swap the field day and night, as we have long long grass in one field and shorter in the other. As we have one TB and one cobby type it helps to swap them and also that the bigger mare doenst then have to be muzzled all day.
Happy ponies though!

Mine are all out 24/7, with a field shelter as well as plenty of natural shelter in the form of trees and hedges. My wee mre was curled up in the field shelter during the hottest part of the day, so I know they appreciate the shelter.

Urmmmm, might have to duck for cover here.............I've voted "other".

There is no turn-out at our yard (more than 100 horses) but our horses are fortunate to have us and we rent a little field over the road. They go out most days but are always in at night.

OH's mare does hate flies though and she normally wants to go back in her box if they're particularly bad.

Mind you, we took 3 horses away last year and they were out in a field 24/7 - just made me laugh to find all 3 of them crammed in the box one morning. Again, it was the flies that were bothering them.

Mine are out 24/7 in the summer with trees/hedges around the field. Same as Mabel98 our stables get very hot as they catch the sun. Horses seem happy, with fly spray and sun cream on. I try and leave them out for as much of the year as possible usually March til October.

Sorry...off topic again G!

From ours, I don't suppose you'd know if hacking to Rabson would be do-able at all would it? By road on Gmaps it's 6.8 miles. Though I can go straight up through the hangings at ours which cuts 2 or 3 miles out and either (a) come out above clyff pypard and on the road to winterbourne or (b) go across the field tracks straight to Rabson somehow.

Do you reckon it would be do-able?

Mine is kind of out 24/7 with natural shelter, but when I want to ride in the evening after work she comes in during the day. I am finding this to be quite a good routine as she has more energy when I ride and it's stopping her getting too fat. I think when its really hot and there are loads of flies she quite likes coming into her nice cool stable.

Yeah I reckon you could do it! I used to hack to Winterbourne Bassett with a friend quite often - I guess what you would do is hit Yatesbury Lane and follow it along (left from Corton) and then once you get to Winterbourne, try to find a XC route rather than touching the roads....I'm sure there must be a way!

I said in during day, out at night, but really he chooses, not me and just goes in his stable when he wants and snoozes.

I'm on googlemaps as I type....

What could go wrong with my skills when it comes to hacking and directions lmao!

Two of mine are retired and are living out 24/7. They have a field shelter in their field. My other two also live out 24/7 with natural shelter (trees/hedges) although they do come in for a couple of hours in the day when it is hot. :)

mine are out at night and in during the day.

Millie is allergic to flies (yes really!) so is best kept in during the day.

there is no shelter in the field from flies or the sun so i prefer them in during the day when it is hot- they spend all day dozing in their stables and seem much happier than when they were out in the day being harassed by flies.

I have put , other, because allthough they are all out 24/7 all year, two of the ponies are in the yard during most of the summer because they get fat, and are prone to laminitis.
Although they are not technically stabled, they are roaming the yard , with axcess to stables if they want to go in.

mines in during the day as his field is on slope and has no shade whatso ever. Also weve got a lot of flies so beening in helps, he comes in from 11 and back out at 5, so only half day in really, we have those stables where the partionition is a grill and also a have a window at the back where he can touch noses with the horses in the paddock behind and most days has a stable neigbour. Mines a tb and he just gets soaking in the sun but he likes a routine, it seems to be working for us

Out 24/7 with natural shelter, the field is not ideal really as there's not a lot of grass so I'm sticking hay out, still it's better than nothing. The stables are way too hot and stuffy!
