hi i currently have 2 mares that live out 24/7,
Iv been looking for another pony for quite a while and have seen a 4yr old gelding i like,

Question is would you keep 2 mares and a gelding together.

Thanks in advance.

I have a mare, Fany , and she is happily turned out with mainly geldings, with just her "baby" filly. I think it works well if the horses are fairly amenable. Fany is fine, Captain hates mares.

Can you ask if the gelding pony has run with mares before?

Good luck if you buy him.

Sparks has been out in mixed her, but is now in an individual paddock as spent the whole time shagging the last gelding she was out with!:D May have left them to it, if it wasn't for the fact they were shod and wearing rugs at the time.

I personally wouldn't. I've had problems in the past with a mixed herd - mares fighting, geldings fighting and a gelding out with a couple of mares was just awful - every time I went to get my mare in the gelding rounded her up and drove her up the field.

As I say though only my personal experience and others seem to manage quite well.

I have never had any problems with several mares and one gelding. I have also had two groups of two geldings with one mare, again without problems. However, I have had terrible problems with two separate geldings when I have had them in mixed herds. One was so bad that I had to ask the owner to leave because even when separated he would get through the fence and beat up the other gelding. The remaining trouble making gelding has now had to be separated in his own paddock and stays there happily. So I would say that it very much depends on the horses concerned. I currently have a group of one mare and two geldings and the mare keeps the geldings in line and out of trouble. When she had to go away to hospital for a few days, the geldings were terrible and got into all kinds of trouble charging about and overly rough playing. When she got back, they immediately behaved themselves again!

Had 2 mares and 1 gelding which was fine, then had 2 mares and 2 geldings (also fine) and now on 3 geldings and 1 mare with no problems.

Have had various combinations over the years and they have all worked out OK. 2 geldings did have a to do at one point but it was an inevitable swapping of places in the herd order. They sorted themselves out and are happy as larry.
