My mare had an abscess over a month ago now, had it drained by the vet, had a small/medium sized hole there. She has been on box rest since and currently has no shoes on. She has not been turned out (I know, poor her!) at all as I really didn't want a reinfection and would rather be safe than sorry. It all seems cleared up now, is growing back nicely and she hasn't had anything plugged in the hole/hoof boots/anything covering the hoof in the stable.

Do you think it would be ok to turn her out, with the hoof uncovered? Unfortunately I don't have any hoof boots. Our fields are well maintained and not very muddy. I would really like to get her turned out this weekend, I just worry it could get re-infected.

Hopefully it will reassure you to know that my mare has had a lot of abscesses (poor girl :( ) and that she's been outside the whole time (the farrier and vet wanted me to keep her out).

Here you go... a photo of her standing on grass with lots of hoof missing due to two abscesses. She's had one that was dug out of the sole and she stayed out then too.

I would have turned out ages ago! My lad had one box rest for a week until all gunk out and hole not as big.
If been in stable with nothing covering it then its prob less dirty in field at least not stood in urine or poo! Go for it.
I tried the hoof plug it was rubbish he was rather excited to be out and it was out after 3 hours. If u have any tetramycin (blue spray) use that it will help prevent infection starting

I now realise I probably could have turned out earlier, but she also had laminitis WITH the abscess (sorry for not mentioning) and I wanted to give the all clear on that too. I will try and plug the hoof and if she gets it off - which is likely as she is probably going to be psychotic  then I do have some iodine I can use to disinfect the area.

Thanks :)
