Can anyone recomend any good turnout boots that dont cost the earth? Im on a tight budget so best value would be nice. Also as ive never used them before do i need both front and hind? Thanks

Do you need turnout boots at all? I've never used them - think they can potentially cause more problems especially in this wet weather where they hold water and mud next to the legs whilst being worn - and badly fitting ones can rub.
Also, they rarely dry thoroughly overnight which means you are more than likely putting wet boots back on legs.

We're in water logged clay mud and I've got some ancient Shires ones (currently @£16.99) and they are excellent. Legs stay clean and dry.
Also have the Premier equine ones, £28 fronts and £30 hinds. Also very good but slightly trickier to put on especially if its in poor light.
Both sorts wash well and dry quickly.
Just invested in the equi-chaps close contact which are an upgraded version of the hardy chaps and local tack shop charged an eye watering £70 for a pair. Not sure yet if they are worth the money but I couldn't get the Shires one's which are such good value for money.

I used to use Premier Equine turnout chaps and I would never use them again. Didn't let the legs breathe, rubbed, and trapped moisture in. We ended up with a nightmare situation that led to a lot of box rest.
I personally wouldn't tell someone not to use something as every horse is different, but I thought they would be the best answer (especially as they were a good brand) however couldn't regret it any more, now I turn him out just in over reach boots and brush off the high mud, occasionally wash some off.

I have heard that the equi-chaps ones are meant to be more breathable and closer contact which would be better, but wouldn't recommend the Premier Equine ones.

I'm really surprised to hear this.. We had similar problems to the ones you had, but with Equi chaps which I would never use again and never recommend to anyone! I love my premier equine ones and have had no problems at all with them. I wont use anything else now!

Darkwater; That is strange. I personally have never used the equi-chaps but after the problem I had they were suggested to me, with many good reviews.

I do think every horse is different and I guess a lot depends on how they fit! I sold my PE ones because I strongly believed they were the issue, and caused so many problems.

I love my PE ones! I have Sportabac ones too and the PE ones in comparison are much easier to put on, better fitting and much more breathable.

I was looking at either the PE ones or shires. They r on ebay but tack shop does them for £20 each. Just wondering if its really worth buying. My fields r muddy but mainly in gateways. Been reading up on mud fever and it looks horrid for the horse. Trying preventative measures on my boy
