I'm sorry this has, I am sure, been done to death! Over the summer I have created the base for a turnout area and i'm now looking to put down a surface on top but I need some suggestions as I've not been able to find a solution yet.

It was a scruffy, undrained area, so it has had the full make over and been dug out, drainage laid, clean stone and then finished with a permeable tarmac laid on top. So now I am wanting to put a surface down so that horses can be turned out on to it safely. I am staying away from woodchip for various reasons; what has anyone else done and have you any recommendations?

Any thoughts gratefully welcomed!

We are at the same stage with ours, and hubby plans to use very very fine grey stone...

we have two sand paddocks, well sand and soil really and it can be slippy in very cold mornings but on the whole its a god send. the horses go out in pairs as its divided by electric and each horse gets two hours a day. they have a massive net on each side and this copes with three horses each without running out so we dont worry about sand colic as they dont feed off the floor. in the summer months its not used so the pigs get turned out overnight or sometimes in the day which is nice for them although they make a hell of a mess lol. it gets harrowed every so often.

I must take a picture now..

Ours is all finished, and looks very smart :) Just need to run a strand of electric rope round the inside top rail, and work out how to feed hay..

I was thinking a big plastic cold water storage tub from a plumbers merchants with haynet tied inside, but open to suggestions...

Will definitely harrow ours applecart, as its got membrane underneath, so I don't want it to get exposed and torn...
