So having just had my Amigo washed and reproofed - turns out it's no longer waterproof as my horse was soaked through yesterday morning! (It is about 8 years old)

I am wanting/thinking of going down the PE route and looking for one second hand but they are like gold dust. If I can't find PE (I've also heard mixed reviews on these but I've tried a friends o just for size and they are deep and I do like them although can be very heavy)- what would you all recommend?

She's is a 14.2 Connie X type.

She's in a 6ft3 Amigo that I had for my old mare and she certainly doesn't need any bigger but it does fit her ok. She's probably between a 6ft and 6ft 3.

I don't have a huge budget - I can't justify Rambo so looking for something decent and sensibly priced ideally (max £150ish for a turnout) compatible with a liner system to save getting 10 different rugs! I can then use my HW liners for her stable rug.

I had a PE that I absolutely loved and it did over 10 years but I heard that the new ones weren't as good and so I've been converted by the Rambo's and Rhinos. I've got the optimo and it's the same sort of deep cut as the PE but not as heavy when wet.

The old PEs were good but I’ve stopped buying them now as the new ones just don’t stay waterproof.
If you want to use liners the swish rugs are really good, they do stay dry even in torrential rain you’ll get one for under £100, liners around £40 and there’s usually a discount code around somewhere.

The PE i had was really heavy as a 100g, and not great in the neck/ shoulder fit. They come up big as well but I've always been too paranoid to buy a size smaller!

I use PE as my chap is big shouldered and deep and they fit well. I use them all the time (in the stable too) and have two to rotate if one gets wet if he is out. The liners can often be picked up on the PE second hand gear facebook group and the outers themselves aren't extortionate especially if there is a wee discount on, I think they are still worth it compared to others for similar prices. I get a 50g as my outer though, I think the no fill ones are not as waterproof. Or if you can get your hands on one of the red 'buster' outers they are great. I think you just can't clean them too often (or at least thats my excuse!!)

I hate PE with a passion because of their faulty product and abysmal "customer service". They are also extremely heavy rugs

Personally I like Weatherbeeta and Shires.

Originally bought a cheap Shires as a back up but it did a great job so gradually bought more. They are a good price, fit well and I've never had any issues with leaking etc.

I was always a weatherbeeta fan but for a while there their prices were ridiculous. I've got a couple of their newer comfitec rugs and I really rate them.

For the sake of Billy Balance (for those of you who listen to John Robins and Elis James on 5Live:cool:) I really rate PE rugs. I have old ones that are still very waterproof - even a lightweight - and newer ones that are great. Yes they're heavy but I'm sure that's part of the reason they last as long as they do. They're the only ones that are deep enough on my wide and deep girthed boys - for a 14.2 connie however I think you'd have others that would suit her shape as well and could be worth considering.

I have been looking at the Comfitech ones - I always used on only ever used Weatherbeeta (until I found the HW liner system) and always did like their rugs. Some are pricey though and I don't really know the difference between the comfitech and Comfitech Premier etc.

Do you find they are generous sizes? a 6ft 3 Amigo is definately big enough so wondering if I'd need a 6ft or to stick with a 6ft 3. I always remember them quite generous.

This I basically use the same with liners but I don't get the outer rug washed, I brush off mud once a year then spray with fabsil gold.

Maybe have a look at Swish. I have one and am really impressed with it.
I bought it 2nd hand to tide a new horse over until I had more money but kept it and use it to death.

I like my PE's - yes they're heavy but they work and they fit nicely. Got sick of other rugs leaking.

That being said I've seen good things about Swish so will try them when I next need a new rug. I have a fleece & exercise sheet from them and they're lovely quality.

I'm a Shires fan generally - great for the price that they are. A picture of my horse wearing his new rainsheet four years ago popped up in my FB memories last week and I am delighted to say the rug still looks good and was completely waterproof in yesterday's torrential rain. Given that he rarely wears anything heavier than his sheet, it has stood up to four winter's use remarkably well.

I use shires and amigo for my lot. They also have liners in various weights which makes it easier to get the correct weight of rug. They stay waterproof for years but I don’t wash and reproof as that’s what seems to wreck them.

I find weatherbeeta a generous true to size and shires true to size. I find Amigo on thr neater side of true to size

If that makes any sense!

My horse is between 6ft3 and 6ft6. So his shires and Amigo 6ft6 are a smidge big but WB 6ft3 fits him pretty much spot on.

My PE is definitely waterproof and excellent quality, but it is heavy and it is also very generously sized and deep. It does sit very well though and doesn't rub or shift to one side. Mine is a 40g as I never buy no-fill because they always seem to leak.

As a side note, I used to always buy Weatherbeeta but was really disappointed with them a couple of years ago with price, quality and not being waterproof.

I wonder if this is is what's happened to mine as it's never leaked before but i've just had it re proofed and now it's leaking :(

I’ve just bought a weatherbeeta and also a Trojan xtra and both are 1200 denier so much more waterproof than the 500 d ones I’m pleased with them both the Trojan fits quite big. Though so luckily I got the ones with trigger clips at the front so it can be tightened as mare very narrow at the front. The weatherbeeta perfect

Personally if you know amigos fit her, I would get one of these - affordable, waterproof, durable. amigo bravo 12 plus lite turnout rug

I would then get the liners second hand ebay / facebook / market place etc. Rambo / Horseware / Derby house / Amigo / Premier Equine all fit this rug.

That has always been my experience of getting a rug washed and reproofed. I’ve had several good rugs ruined. I just don’t bother anymore.

These also are ones I was considering! I already have the liners for the Amigo that I've got now :) Ideally I wanted one around 100g. Do they do them in this rug?!

I buy Weatherbeeta Comfitec Dynamic Plus (The top of the range ones) - their sizing equates to PE on the big chested HW show cob. They're 1200D outer and never leak.
The cheaper ones - Original, Essential, etc don't fit him and are 600D - he would have to go up a size and even then, the chest isn't right on him
I did buy a Comfitec Ultra Tough detachable neck (1680D outer) last Winter in the sale - was supposed to be £219 but I got it for about £50 less and had some Amazon vouchers from work so took a punt and it is a fabulous rug - really, really tough and fits really well, all my Dynamic Plus and the Ultra Tough have the memory foam wither pads and they're cracking rugs.
I do think if you wash and proof they're never the same. So I admit to replacing them every couple of years and selling the old ones, as my cob is easy on rugs it barely costs me the price of a wash & reproof for a new rug!

Size wise my conny wears a 6'3 amigo, he came with a 6'3 PE rug (which I hate with passion). It is much more generous in size than the amigo.
He's a 15'1 conny so I think 6'3 PE would be too big for yours

I have 3 P.E's x2 40g & a 200g, they're now a good few years old, been washed & proofed - never been torn, leaked or anything! Yes they're heavy but they do the job really well!
My £200 Rambo with the liner system on the other hand only 2yr old, inside has all disintegrated & looks like a miniskirt on my WB - doesn't even cover his belly!

I have a PE which is a lovely quality rug, and fits the boy beautifully, but my go-to is Bucas Smartex, with the blanket lining. I've got a mw with no neck, a mw with a detachable neck, and a no-fill, which I use when I would normally have a 100g on, because of the blanket lining. They are really great rugs

I have a couple of old, original 450g standard neck PE rugs in 6ft, one might be a 6ft3" that I used for 1 season and haven't used since. I really should sell them. I hate them. I probably still have the necks for them too.

I got GrayMo a Swish rug last year, 6ft6" 450g turnout with detachable neck. Baring in mind he is a 17hh American TB so not Dainty but not chunky it is neat on him. I wouldn't want to put it on anything bigger width wise. I am not using the neck this year as it took out half of his mane. Again it was quite snug on him even on it's biggest setting. Great quality but sizing wouldn't be great for a chunk of a horse I would say.
