O, I see. I thought you meant how to put them in a field! lol. Was going to say just let them go?!
I'm dreading the day my grey starts going out! She's a bog monster! Daz for the bottom of tails (don't get it on the dock though as it'll not be nice for ponio) and if you're like me and sew up your plaits thread all your needles in advance and stick them into the front of your jumper so you can just pull one out when you need it

Or stick the needles in a sponge so you don't stab yourself
How grey is your grey? If your horse is a white grey maybe avoid using a white saddlecoth, it just makes the horse look dirtier.

Yep, now you say that it seems infinitely more sensible than my approach! lol. In fairness all my needles are so blunt from BH's greasy mane that I couldn't stab myself with them if I tried mind you!
