Ok so I spent the couple of hours that George was turned out watching him with the two others, it was very exciting they ate and they ate and they ate. They all stood together and there was no nastiness, so George is obviously not an inherently nasty horse. Also the yard owner came down to see me and said there was no way she would chuck me out as she really liked me

They are going to partition the field with electric fence and George will go 1 side with 1 or 2 others who he gets on with, but I think it will be a while before they get this sorted as they don't have the fencing, so as there's nowhere else for him to go he'll have to put up with 2hrs turnout for the time being.

I should be relieved but now I am beginning to question the turnout as they only get 5hrs a day anyway, and I'm now being told that in the winter it is only 3-4hrs and sometimes alternate days

Do you think I should let things settle as generally I do like the yard and crazy as it sounds George does seem settled, or should I be thinking about somewhere else in the long term?

Thanks all for your support and advice

To be honest if they were not getting daily turnout in the winter , I would be worried BUT it depends what work he is in and how fit he is, I tended to find with our horses if the weather was grotty the ones who were stabled wanted to come in anyway after a few hours and stood by the gate til they were brought in, but they always wanted to go out, if he is in hard work and you are happy there he might be happy just going out on alternate days

Hello!

Pleased it has put your mind at ease seeing that Goerge isnt a nasty boy!

Hmm why arent they getting the option of 24/7 turnout in summer?

Fair enough if you WANT him in, but in summer I think any yard worth its salt should give the option of 24hr turnout.

My yard does 24/7 turnout in winter too, I wouldnt be at any yard that didnt.
I know lots of people dont mind keeping them in in winter, but if I want my horses to be out I expect to be able to use my own judgement.

also did you ask her how long it will take her to sort the fencing out, just make sure she is actually doing it, and its not one of these things that never happens!

hmmmm i was telling you to stay put last night but that turn out, or lack of, would send me and my boy barmy and i would be looking around. glad its working out well though with the fencing off etc as i hoped, well done.

I agree, the lack of turnout doesn't seem to be affecting George but......... I just don't know if I can face moving yards after only having had my first horse for just over 2 months, I am so confused and frustrated.

Excellent news about him not being the devil he was perhaps being made out to be.

Personally I want all year turnout for my horse. And I want the option of 24/7 in the summer. However, I do understand that in certain parts of the country this is not possible.

In your shoes, I think I would be quietly putting feelers out to find a new yard that does guarantee all year turnout.
