Turns on forehand / haunches

Hi All,

My boy is getting quite good at turn on the forehand now, I'm trying to teach him that legs don't always mean "go faster"! Could someone explain the aids to turn on the haunches please, and how they differ to those for turn on the forehand? I don't want to confuse him!

Mine is actually better at turn on haunches. The I think I started asking for it when changing rein b to e. It's also good to ride squares/diamonds instead if circles and ask in the corners. The main difference in aid for me is asking on the girth, not behind and trying to make sure she keeps thinking forwards. I probably do it all wrong! This isn't helpful advice is it?

I ask on the girth with the outside leg and somtimes need to back up on the shoulder with my whip as my boy gets mind block sometimes. I also keep the inside rein open and the outside rein closed and on his neck.

These are great exercises to teach your horse. I would recommend learning to ride counter bend first eg: asking him to look towards arena fence whilst moving along it at same time and next through corners and eventually round circles whilst looking to the outside. Then sprial the circle smaller and smaller and you will develop a turn on haunches naturally and progressively. Better still, find a good BHS / Accredited instructor and get their help.
