I'm trying to find a decent tweed jacket for showing and being defeated!!

I quite fancy a blue tweed but not sure if that would suit colour of horse as he is chestnut?? (I have a navy hat if this helps!)

Any help out there peeps?! :)

I know some people will poo poo the idea of blue tweed for showing but i have a dark blue tweed with a maroon overcheck that I bought under the supervision of some friends of mine who are show producers. They also show a couple of theirs in navy tweed with a red overcheck (and we're talking top top level county stuff). These are all M&Ms though - don't know if it's the same for hunters or if you can get away with a it more with an M&M.

My pony is black and blue goes well with him. I always think green goes well with a chestnut - maybe a really rich dark green. My jacket was from Alexander James - got it on their trade stand at Burghley (reduced from about £225 to £75 - best horsey bargain I've ever come across!).

My pony and jacket (gratuitous photo):

Green looks lovely with chestnuts!

I'm going to do exactly what Walrus said someone would and say don't go for blue, as it looks unprofessional. (and i mean no offence to you Walrus when I say that - obviously it's working for you, and lovely pony!).

It was explained to me in this manner:

Most professionals wear green, brown or mustard tweeds. In showing, we always try to present ourselves as professionally as possible. The reason for this is because, despite a judges best efforts, they will take an immediate first impression of you when you enter the ring. When you enter turned out as traditionally and professionally as possible, the initial impression is that you probably have a high quality horse. Stand out from the crowd by doing something different, and the impression isn't immediatly so high.

That being said, a good horse is a good horse, and is Walrus is clearly showing, good horses speak for themselves in the ring!

Hehe, no problem Miss Bird. I know what you mean. The producers I know work on the principle that especially in the native classes the horses all look very similar (see massive 30-40 horse classes full of fells and dales or a whole ring of grey connies). By making yourself look slightly different the judge is more likely to remember and be able to easily identify you when they look back over the ring full of similar ponies. Of course this principle works on you being very good and the bit that the judge remembers is you being brilliant not because you *ahem* canter on the wrong leg or something! :D

ETA: if course I also think my boy would look gorgeous with a mustard or a green tweed - in an ideal world I'd have a couple to choose from........and an oakley horsebox, fylde saddle, well schooled pony.......*Walrus drifts off to deamworld!*

I have to say, I was looking at some mustard tweeds and rather liked them! Would you say these colours (green/mustard) go with any chestnut horse (orange monster to liver c/dark)?

The Dublin Cambridge is quite nice in green..

Would be going into riding horse/hack/hunter type classes.

I'm sorry for all the questions but is my first attempt at 'Tweed' :D and have seen some excellent photo's of people all coordinated with their horse colourwise so really want to get it right and decide on a colour and team up a matchy tie and browband, etc :)

Pretty Ponies jackets are fab as are Showing Selection and Mrs Candy (Foxley). If your budget won't stretch to approx £250.00 then have a look at the Show Clothes for sale section on HorseGossip. Bought my daughter's fabulous PP Mustard Tweed off there for £75.00 (new price £235.00) it was immaculate and is admired wherever we go :)
