twitching question

Yes just to pull my horses mane. I do use the solocomb in between to keep it tidy but need to pull it from time to time to thin it. Maximum time - no more than 10 minutes tops and another 10 minutes afterwards till he properly wakes up!
 
Clipping, pulling manes and tails, but I certainly wouldnt be keeping it on any longer than half an hour absolute maximum.
My sisters horse has to have it on to clip in his ears, he can only stand 5 mins max, all his veins come up he lurches forward and just goes mad, in fact get dangerous, ive seen this happen before, some horses rect different to others.
 
Some horses don't respond well (i.e. by going sleepy) to the twitch. One doesn't know until/unless someone has tried to do it.
 
my girl stood still, went to sleep, and let me clip her (started off clipping fine, then decided rearing was more fun so we had to twitch) but i was worried it'd hurt her nose :(
 
I have a humane twitch for when I am on my own, you cant get them as tight as a normal string twitch, but a word of advice if you buy a humane twitch, stainless steel with the red handles, the bit that you clamp around the nose is always too wide and will keep slipping off the nose, so I put mine in the vice to make it narrower, if all that makes sense.

We only have it on for mane pulling and occasionally tail pulling so not long

Cuz after a really horrible experience with a "proffesional" groom paid to do it this weekend, i had to call an end to it halfway through, she now looks horrific and is scared s**tless of the clippers. :(
 
Tried sedaline?

I would say just twitch or whatever to get it over with this time but then spend all summer getting her used to the sound or feel, if you have a google you will find all sorts of tips.

Some horses just dont like clippers. however i agree that they can be improved by spending alittle time getting used to them. I have to clip Inky regulaly in summer as thats how we show. I started off with him as a foal running the clippers and touching him etc.. he was first clipped as a yearling and even after spending some time with him he still hated his legs being done. Now after perservering his legs are no problem at all!! However no matter how much i try he still hates his ears being done!! :)
 
Yes, we have used a twitch with the vet and the farrier but only ever in a case of necessity for the horse's health. I certainly wouldn't use a twitch for cosmetic purposes. Some horses do not react well to a twitch and other fight it if their adrenaline is high.
 
I use a twitch when clipping my boys legs, he also has sedalin but it is a necesity as he has mites and if he isnt twitched i would have died many moon ago!! But we put it on then take it over for few mins after about 15mins. It works well with him if put on properly and the humane one didnt work at all, the string ones are better,,,word of warning be careful when taking them off though mine tries to beat you to it and quite often end up with a flying twitch!!
 
Six inches of broom handle and two or three loops of baling band, makes an ideal twitch. My understanding of how they work is that the preassure on the nerves release endorphines in to the system, thus produding a sedating effect on some horses, but not all and it can be a nasty experience if it has a paradoxical effect.
 
I've twitched B before and would do it again.

Wanted to twitch him when the dentist was out recently beause he was getting fidgety as she did his upper incisors (I would have been too!) although I wasn't able to find one.

Would only leave it on for 10 mins though really.

Interestingly, he responds very very well to having his ears squeezed together and rubbed. It chills him quite significantly, so I tend to do this if he needs it.

I'd much rather use a twitch than have them get upset.
