Andrew Downes from Mow Cop in Staffordshire lost his mount Skwal, who dropped dead from a heart attack after finishing the course well.
Frenchman Jean-Lou Bigot, a former European Champion, lost his Icare d'Auzay, equal eighth after dressage, after a fall at the Vicarage Vee, number 13.
While jumping the corner at the ditch, the French horse unexpectedly veered right, snapping the marker flagpost in half and staking himself in the chest.

From where I was standing - close to the jump - he wasn't stabbed in the chest. It was the femoral artery that was hit, and that's not in the chest!
